Last Minute Fathers Day Gifts

Episode 874- Last Minute Father's Day Gifts 2012
Daddy Clay visits Finley's Barber Shop for a full "manpering" experience. Finley's is not your every day run of the mill chop shop. You can get a full haircut, straight razor shave, hot towel treatment, and a shoulder massage. Oh, and they have beer! Definitely a great Father's Day gift if there's a full service barber shop in your area.

For daily cleansing of Dads, believe it or not, there are great bath products for men. Dove Men + care products including face and body wash and deodorants would be a great gift, especially "wrapped" in a new tool box. (Because Dad's don't do gift baskets.)

Time is another great idea. The gift of time for his fitness really won't hurt Dad's feelings. He'll actually like having the time to workout or run guilt free. Health and fitness are important to every Dad.

If Dad is a gadget geek, the Jawbone Jambox will really get him moving. It's take anywhere wireless speaker the produces big sound in a small package.

Got a great idea? Or did you get a great Father's Day gift? Join the forums at DadLabs.com and tell us about it!

Are Front Carriers Safe for Babies

From way out in left field, concerns are being raised about the safety of front carriers for babies. Dr. Amanda Kelly from the Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio sets the record straight. There is no medical evidence, at all, anywhere, that carrying a child in a front carrier increases their risk of hip dysplasia. The fear may be stemming from the fact that traditional Native American "cradleboards" did increase the risk of "developmental dysplasia of the hip" because of the way babies legs are forced together in those carriers. With front carriers, the hips are free to be in a natural and flexible position. There is also no evidence linking front carriers to any problems with genitalia or the spine. Be aware that there are still opponents to front carriers, even though there is zero medical evidence linking front carriers to hip problems. Slings are a different story. Warnings have been issued that improperly carrying a baby in a sling CAN cause their airway to become restricted. To avoid any tragedy in your family, please do your research. Find a carrier that's the right fit for you and your baby. If it's not comfortable to you, you simply won't use it. Baby Bjorn has many styles and sizes of carriers to fit every baby and parent. Safe Photo Sharing - Burst

What is a safe way for you and your family to share photos and videos? Because kids love to see themselves and their friends in photos and videos, first, be positive. There is so much creativity expression with photography and videography. Cameras of all shapes and sizes are more accessible and easier to use. Share tips for taking better pics/video, such as the "rule of thirds" and how to avoid back lighting. Also disable the GPS tagging function of the phone/camera. There's no need to post EXACTLY where you're taking photos when sharing them. This is generally a fairly simple set up procedure and you may want to do it on your own device as well.

Now for sharing. Forget about texting, Instagram and Facebook. Texting a video or photo is like handing over the file for someone to do anything they want with it. What may be funny and cute to your child and their friends, may not be so amusing out of context and gone viral around the world. With texting, you lose complete control of what you share. While Facebook has some privacy controls, their terms of service give THEM very flexible permissions to use your content, and Facebook has had problems implementing their own privacy policies on more than one occasion, usually blaming it on a third party application provider. Besides, did you know it's a violation of federal law for anyone under the age of 13 to set up an account! Same for Instagram, and privacy controls for sharing there are non-existent. Photos in Instagram are visible to all members.

For more "social security" if you will, you can create galleries using iPhoto or Shutterfly and even allow friends and family to add images, but not download files. A password protected blog is another alternative that can provide safer sharing. You can also use an app like Burst.it. This is a family friendly sharing app that allows you to set up groups of friends/family, and parental controls for uploading and sharing photos and videos. It doesn't allow others to download or manipulate the content. The files are saved online, and can even be "unshared," yet still archived. To learn more about this great app, visit www. burst.it

They are working with the National Association for the Education of Young Children to develop healthy ways to integrate technology into the early learning environment. This site encourages parents and educators to share media and technology based resources, videos, games, eBooks, and other interactive tools. The Fred Rogers Center is primarily focused on children from birth to age 5. They bring in experts from various tech-industry areas including research, policy, advocacy, and education, to help find ways to use technology to support early childhood development.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
