Dealing with Tantrums

Tantrums, meltdowns, and hissy fits can be a nightmare for parents. In this episode of The Lab, Daddy Clay and Daddy Brad tackle this important child behavior topic. Since we're all about fairness here at DadLabs, we'll first show kids some techniques for throwing a temper tantrum and getting the most of their meltdown, including the best locations for their hissy fit. We also speak with early parenting coach, Carrie Contey, PhD. to learn why temper tantrums happen, how child development factors into it, and what mom and dad can do to deal with them. The dads also weigh in with their thoughts and reveal what exactly they're thinking when they see other parent's children throwing a tantrum. DadLabs Ep. 563 is brought to you by BabyBjorn.

How to Choose the Best Pacifier

How to Choose the Best Pacifier. Today in the Lab we hear from Baby 411 author and pediatrician Ari Brown on the subject of choosing a pacifier for your baby. The AAP now recommends that all parents use a pacifier as a part of their Safe Sleep Guidelines to prevent SIDS. But which pacifier is right for you and your baby? Ari is joined by her favorite lactation consultant Linda Hill and she weighs in on the Great Binky Debate. She prefers a rounded shape to the nipple -- not flattened or flange shaped as this will cause abnormal breast feeding and potentially hurt mom. Weaning from a pacifier should happen at 4-6 months of age. Your local independent baby specialty store will have a good variety of pacifiers to choose from. Thanks to Baby's and Kid's 1st Furniture. Preventing SIDS: New Safe Sleep Guidelines

Preventing SIDS: Revised Safe Sleep Guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Since the AAP recommended that parents place babies on their backs for sleep, the cases of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome has decreased significantly. The AAP has updated their recommendations to clarify what parents can do to best prevent SIDS and keep babies sleeping safely. A safe crib has only a mattress with a snugly fitted sheet -- no bumpers, pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, monitoring devices. And remember, drop-sided cribs are no longer recommended! Follow these guidelines to prevent the threat of suffocation and SIDS. Clay Nichols and Brad Powell host.
