The Lab
Monday, January 14, 2008 The battle against snot rages across a nation ravaged by cold and flu season. Into this mucoid landscape step two shining, antihistamine heroes. Daddy Brad and Daddy Clay pull back the tissue and reveal the truth about caring for your bugger-nosed babe all brought to you by our friends at BabyBjorn. The truth about cough and cold medicines for kids may surprise you. You may think this video is funny, but it's snot.
If your child has a fever, persistent cough, sore throat, etc take them to the doctor. But for kids under 6 years of age with symptoms of the common cold, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, store bought cold medications and cough syrups are ineffective. Best defense it to wash your hands and remember to scrub for at least 20 seconds. Try Squid Soap.
And for those of you with kids in day care, please don't dose and dump.
Update: FDA Follows DadLabs' Lead
The FDA issued a warning yesterday, that over the counter cold medicines should not be given to children under two. They are still considering further recomendations for children aged 2-11. Get the details here. We hate to say we told you so...

The medical site http://www.Kidshealth.com has got our back. In the newsletter I received today, they had an article on handwashing.

How I miss the days when we could give our kids Benadryl with reckless abandon...
As always, I loved the video! If you haven't already tried this, as alternative to the nasal aspirators (aka snotsuckers :-) ) is the NoseFrida. http://www.nosefrida.com/ It looks totally nasty, but it works & is much less invasive.
So, what CAN we do to help with cold symptoms in a toddler so it doesn't cause an ear infection?? We just went through this with my 22 month old, and she now has a double ear infection since no matter how many times we cleared her nose it didn't do much.
Tiffany-- We ended up getting tubes for our two oldest. Not much help, I know. That's the really frustrating things about this report. There is an implied shrug of the shoulders.
Another note, in honor of this episode, Daddy Troy is home with a sick kid today. See how committed we are?
My LO is only 5 months old, so we haven't had to face a snotty child yet (or as Bill Cosby would say, the glazed donut face). I haven't been able to bring myself to use one of those snot suckers yet... they're kind of grody. I look forward to using the quality information provided in this segment when she gets her first cold. Page bookmarked.
So gross! Can't stand the site of a jar of snot. Yuck. Robitussin or Benadryl are what we reach for first...even though I guess you can't use those now, right? THey discounted the placebo affect of feeling like you did something by giving them drugs...that feeling is priceless. :-)
Most recent viewer submitted suggestions:honey good for cough for kids over 2 (honey is really bad for babies). Lots of folks have good luck with Vicks Vapo-rub.
Awesome. Why have I not seen found dadlabs before?! We use honey for our kids' coughs at night -- it works as well or better than cough syrup. Also steam can help the congestion, as well as garlic, onions, spicy foods, etc.
I used salt water in a nasal atomizer to flush out all the boogies when I was a kid and that is what our pediatrician recommends with our little one. We mix a 1/2 tsp of salt to one cup of warm water. For babies put a few drops with and eyedropper in a clogged nostril, wait a couple of seconds and suck it out with the nasal bulb. With older kids and adults use a nasal atomizer and have them blow their nose. Some pharmacies will have them or you can use and old nasal spray bottle.
As for the hand washing. The abc's song works but I think having them sing the theme to their favorite cartoon works better, especially with older kids. When they get to the end, they're done.
I've never washed my hands so much in my life until our baby was born. My wife is like the clean hands Nazi. Speaking of... I better go wash up now...
My son (18 months) would never put up with the Blue Bulb of Parental Torture. We've had good success using a saline nasal spray to loosen all the crud up. For the most part, it just drains out after that.
IN a comment section after an article about the FDA issued warning, a pissed off mom wrote in and said that the FDA was obviously made up of men. Thougths?
How male of me - I don't get it. What's the gender issue? Moms like medicine more than dads? I'm feeling very dense right now.
Hope it's not too late to be entered in the drawring... I was a lil' busy last week. :) Now that I'm back at work, I have plenty of time to catch up on DadLabs videos. :) So do you give discounts to advertisers for body excretion segments? Hopefully they have a sense of humor. "Snot" funny... it's like an adjective... meaning it's REALLY funny (if yer 10).
