Hey. I love the show, been watching since my wife found this before our son was born 7 weeks ago. I love the bath time focus this week, but was wondering about infant bathing. I use a 4moms Infant bathtub, but was wondering about other options, say if we are out of town. Also what type of soaps you recommend, what type of cleaning cloth or sponge. Thanks.

Great products. My daughter is getting bigger, obviously and doesn't quite fit under the water spout to rinse her hair. The Flo seems like it would work great. Now only if Boon would make a Flo version that changes colors to let you know if the bath water coming out of the faucet is too hot or not.

Keep the great episodes coming.

Ohh, ohh, I want froggy.

Great tips! Check out the cool LED faucet light from thinkgeek. It's normally blue until the temp hits 89 and then the light changes to red.

The Flo is awesome! Our and 2 years old boys love playing in the spray as it comes out. Bath time is definitely different if for some reason the Flo isn't there. It has also saved us from at least 3 head/faucet incidents.

Hey kltbo,

That actually would be cool, I mean warm. Once the water hits the right temp you hit the tub stopper.

Given that the water takes a while to warm up in my house, one of my geek dad challenges has been to learn to run the perfect bath. This involves

1. Find the exact temp setting on the knob so that
2. I can drop the stopper at the exact moment I turn on the water
3. Such that the initial cold water mixes perfectly with the warmer water to run a perfect bath.
4. No water gets wasted down the drain.
5. Super dad runs a perfect bath that is neither under or overdamped (for all those engineers out there)

Since #3 tends up being a little hotter, I tend to not put my kids into the bath until the whole thing has been run.

Here is a piece we did on baby bathtubs during our first season. Its like watching early episodes of the Simpsons. The inflatable one might be good for travel as long as you dry it off.

Casey -- do like the 4moms tub?

April 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterDaddy Troy

Oh man... I have found my home. Anybody who can work in some dynamic systems terms when referring to running under or overdamped kid baths is OK in my book :)

Casey - I'm sure you've figured this out by now, 7 weeks in, but my wife and I just bathed our little dude in the sink until he was too big. We did borrow an infant bath but had a hard time using it and went back to sink bathing.

Later folks,
J

I like the idea of the little partition to keep the child away from the controls, but I kinda think our little guy (at almost 2) is just about big enough to try to scale over that - which could create more of a risky setting than not having it at all.

One important tip is to not add too much water to the tub. They typically need less than you think - and less water equals a little less risk.

We have the temperature-sensing duck and it works great!

I stumbled on your site today and enjoyed your bath safety product showdown. We have a munchkin brand duck-pirate tub thermometer--similar to the cow one you show.

Thanks again guys! I'm going to check the temp on our hot water heater when I get home.

April 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJohn Shields

We've got two of the temp-under-the-animal ones. I REALLY like the idea of the sticky ducks and the one that shows the temp on the top. Now I have a mission of something ot find this weekend.

As for bathing while traveling - as I said on an earlier video, we just shower whole holding our daughter. She's just now 10 months old and getting used to being in the bath on her own since we've been doing the shower thing since about five weeks old.

Gear Daddy is my favorite segment. Lots of very good tips in this episode. We use the turtle and the duck as temp checkers plus our daughter likes playing with them. Now if we could just get her to leave the tub before wrinkling like a prune......

Great demonstration of the Flo. I was wondering how that worked. I'm guessing it will also cool the water a little? What does the frog do?

April 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterStephMom

@Stephmom -- you can check out mondays episode on the Lab to see a demo of the Frog Pod. It's at the end of the vid.

As for bathing and travel, my wife and I used this oversized, baby-contoured sponge that you put in the bottom of the tub. I couldn't find one online, but did come across the Leachco Safer Bather (available at One Step Ahead) which looks essentially similar to what we used.

Another good thing to remember - if you're testing the water with your hand, you should use a part of your hand or arm that hasn't been under the running water since you adjust the warmer temperatures.

Maybe that's obvious, but it seemed like a good addition to get me into the drawing. :)

Whoa! Look at all the comments! Glad to see that so many people are watching and loving the show.

Hey Guys Love the podcast. I have found the best test for water is your elbow. it was what the nurses at the hospital has told us to use during the bathing demo and I was amazed at the difference it makes from your hand or wrist.

Keep up the good work.

we have an infant tub that we use in our sink, but we put the little foam teddy bear dealie under the net that goes on top so he doesn't wang his lil head on anything hard.

mmm boon tub toys = want.

great show--i love the Flo--my daughter thinks it's great fun to drink from it like a water fountain--we need that Froggy, though--plastic bottles and rubber ducks are taking over the tub area!

April 18, 2008 | Unregistered Commenteramanda

Great show! Great items and advise. I discovered this episode from a program I downloaded, "TV Tonic". I can't think of a more needed show into days day and age than one like this showing Dads being Dads!

Thanks

Love the Flo, wonder if that would solve some of our hair washing battles. My kids LOVE the bathtub, but they HATE getting there hair washed, and it is really not much fun for me either!!!

I was sent the link to your site and have enjoyed watching the podcasts. I will be forwarding this to my husband as he travels an extreme amount, so he can do a little learning while he's away. Never knew about the bath gate. Nifty item!

April 20, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterdeniseb

Thanks for the great tips! They are easy enough for all to do and take care of a totally preventable injury.

I love the idea of a baby bath gate. I called my wife over and had her take a look at it. I think we'll probably go and try to find one to buy. Keep up the great tips. I really enjoy your content.

Thanks for this video! I'm still bathing my girls who are 10 months old in the kitchen sink because I'm a bit freaked out about the big tub (and the possible dynamics of bathing them both at once! omg!). Your video gave some great safety advice. I think I'm gonna have to go get one of those boon spout covers, those look really cool. :)

April 23, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

I'm giving my son his 1st bath tomorrow. I'm glad I watched your video. It was very informative. I have been watching all your videos. Thanks and keep up the good work!
