Welcome Brian. Feel free to ask questions. I'm sure you could offer a unique perspective on this subject so we could all learn from you as well. I'd say the fact that your even on this forum is a step towards being a good dad. Congrats! It may not be ideal but it's still worth celebrating.

Hey Brian, welcome to the Labs! I know you must feel a little freaked out about becoming a daddy at a young(er) age, but I have a belief that most dads feel like fumbling teenagers when their little one comes about, they just like to play like their superdad. I bet most moms feel this way too. I know I do whenever I think about holding my little guy for the first time. (Although I'm not too far off from the teenage years, myself, being only 22) I know my 25 year old hubby-to-be feels this way sometimes. He probably wouldn't like me telling you guys this, but he has been feeling pretty freaked out lately, feeling like he won't have any idea what to do.
It's so awesome that you are taking initiative. Shows like 16 and Pregnant never show the good guys in this predicament. You could totally be an awesome example for teen dads. If you ever have any questions, ask us! There are plenty of experienced daddies here, and a few expecting moms who can help you if you ever have any questions about our crazy hormones, lol. Good luck and take care!!

Edit: If mama-to-be has any questions, send her here: Baby Center. They have the most information for moms-to-be than any website I've seen. There is a pregnant teens group as well, so if she needs comfort from other teen girls going through the same thing she is, it can be a big help.

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
