TOPIC: Hi from Maryland

Hi from Maryland
1 Year, 2 Months ago
Hi everyone,

I'm a father of two kids (ages 9 and 5), a husband, and newspaper editor who lives in Urbana, Maryland.

I write a bi-weekly fatherhood column for my paper (www.gazette.net), blog at dadtrends.com and my own website (www.jeffallanach.com/blog, and maintain a public Facebook page on all my adventures in fatherhood (bit.ly/fwfQzo).

I'm mostly looking for other guys who enjoy fatherhood and are there for their children the way we're supposed to be.

Hey Jeff,

Welcome to DadLabs. Scribblers are most welcome. Feel free to cross post and promote whatever dad-related writing you've got here. We're pretty open to that.

I'm adding your blog to my google feed and look forward to hearing more from you.

Cheers,
Clay

Hi Jeff,

I had a read of your blog - you've got some fun topics on there. I like your post about the Star Wars movies, and how you went about introducing them to your own kids. It provoked a few thoughts for me -

First of all, when I was a kid, Star Wars was my thing. I remember when I was about 7 or 8 years old, sitting in a pile of my Star Wars toys, and thinking to myself - "This is important... I'm going to have to pass this on to my own kids one day!" Kids think of some funny things. Of course all those toys are long gone.

Then it made me think - what movies did I love as a kid that I would want to watch with my own son? (When he is old enough, of course, right now he's 4 months). One of my favorite movies when I was a kid was The Dark Crystal. Jim Henson and his crew were just sparkling with creative output in those days. I remember seeing that movie with such wide eyes when I was a kid. So... a few weeks ago I queued it up on Netflix Instant Watch... and I have to say, the Dark Crystal is scary as hell. No wonder that I watched it with such wide eyes... the basic premise is that the world is falling apart, and these evil lizard creatures are practicing genocide on all the other species on the planet. Holy crap. (Great special effects though and a pretty high concept storyline if the kids can follow the dialog and put the pieces together).

Anyway...

Thank you, Roger.

I don't think I ever saw The Dark Crystal, or if I did I don't remember it, so it must not have made an impression on me.

It is amazing how we see movies differently as adults. I wrote a column last year about this very topic. If you're interested, the link is url=bit.ly/a6kTda]here.[/url]

Thank you for sharing.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
