TOPIC: Hi, I'm James, a brand-new dad

Hi, I'm James, a brand-new dad

My name is James, and my wife of 8 years and I just had our first child, a girl, three weeks ago. We're both teachers on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. I've been watching the show since my wife got pregnant, and I love it. I decided that it was time to get out and start interacting with other dads, since I have no idea what I'm doing, so I thought this would be the place to be.

Congrats and welcome James! I'd say there aren't many of us first time dads that know what we're doing. Luckily someone else has been there and done that and we can learn from their mistakes!

Hey, James! Welcome. Dad you know DadLabs was started by three teachers? Troy, Brad and I were all working at a private boarding school in Austin, Texas (a pretty far cry from the Navajo reservation). I still live on the campus (my wife is an administrator), and Troy's wife works there as well.

I know how busy two-teacher families are, but we would love to hear more about raising kids on the Navajo reservation. If you would ever be interested in writing a guest blog, please let us know.

Hope you find lots of useful stuff here.

Cheers!

I'd love to write a guest blog at some point, but I probably need to get a little more experience under my belt first.

Howdy, James.

I think we all feel like we're in a bubble at the beginning. Hopefully, you're finished with the worst part.

@teacherdad No need to be an expert. Just share your experiences. No hurry, or pressure though. Just curious.

Jame,

Similar to you two, my wife and I had about nine years together before our first child. I have been asked many times by childless friends how long to wait until having a child - better to wait and get some relationship time under ones belt first. Jury is still out, and I am sure it differs for each person, but it was good thing for us.

The only weird part is that people change over time, so now my wife and I have a past on which our relationship is founded, now we have changed, and our kids will never know us as those people. For example, we were backpackers, and now don't hike as much but still fancy ourselves as backpackers.

Reminds me of a site myparentswereawesome.tumblr.com/

@ Troy:

I feel like it was a good idea for us to wait too. Of course, my wife and I were still in college when we got married, and then we both worked through graduate programs after we finished our degrees. And then, we both had trouble finding decent jobs in the town we were living in at the time. So, neither of us felt like we were in a good position to have a baby until we moved where we are now and both got good jobs. But, even with that in mind, I feel like we're much better parents now than we would have been at 22/23. Not to mention, we got to do a lot of the great stuff we wanted to do, that is going to be a lot more difficult, or at least take more planning, now that we have a kid.

Like you said, it's impossible to say that this would be true for everyone, but I wouldn't have done it any other way.

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
