Hello from San Diego
1 Year, 3 Months ago
Hello all,
My name is Mike. My wife, Marie, and I live in La Mesa, CA a city just East of San Diego. We found out last Thursday that we're expecting! I've been searching for a site like this. I'm reading Expectant Father while she plows through What to Expect When You're Expecting. I look forward to sharing this forum with all of you and learning along the way!

Welcome, Mike! Congratulations!

I highly recommend hiding the What to Expect books. They should be called How To Freak Out About Everything! But for you, the DadLabs video on pregnancy is great and their book on the first year is useful, plus it doesn't have corners. I also liked the Caveman books. They seemed silly at first look, but they have a lot more solid content than the cover suggests. Something on sleep (Healthy Sleep Habits; Happy Child, especially) are sure to help with the critical time before the first full night of sleep (for everyone).

Enjoy and stop in for a Thursday Live Show.

@bachmanmw Welcome and congrats! I hope that you find the stuff around here useful (once we get you up and running with the videos). Feel free to post questions here. Don't be shy. Lots of experience lurking here. Good insights. Nobody will hassle you for being "newbie" or crap like that. Just ask away. See you around.

Thanks guys!
I'm pretty sure my inability to watch the videos here at the office is due to an internet access limitation by my employer, as other videos are a problem also. I've been watching the videos at home no problem (stayed up pretty late last night enjoying them). They can't stop me from participating in the forum though. Viva la resistance!
Thanks again!
Mike

Congrats and welcome!

Obviously I recommend the DadLabs book but another good one is Baby Bargains. It has tons of reviews for every baby product you could ever need (or don't need) and soon you'll be overwhelmed with trying to figure out which high chair and car seat you'll have to buy. It's a good book to help you narrow down your selection. You can just skip to whatever product has a B rating or higher and ignore the rest.

I also agree with Ben. Those "What to Expect" books can drive you a little bonkers. You'll be convinced you're baby is going to come out legless and with every brain disorder possible after you finish reading that book.

When are you due?

Thank you all! You're making me feel better already about the What to Expect stuff. You're right, I've been paranoid since we found out about miscarraige and all the crazy disorders that could happen after reading the first couple chapters of that one. My fridge is full of organic ($$$) mangos, kiwi and all kinds of other food/vitamins. While I'm appreciative of the knowledge of the potential (Which is common knowledge no?) I don't need to read about that right now. What I need is a book that says, "You're going to be ok, she'll be ok, the baby will be ok, now here's what you need to know to get you through the next 9 months." I'll leave the paranoia to Marie, I need the know-how. @ Ddavis: We go to our 1st MD appointment on 2/17, based on our math I think we're about 6.5 weeks in, so we're thinking mid-late Sept. I think this forum will do me better than What to Expect. I'll check out your book recomendation also. Thank you!

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
