Greetings from a SAHD (but not sad) in CO
1 Year, 5 Months ago
Hi all,

I'm a stay at home dad (by choice) to an 18 mo son. My wife is home 4 days a week as well (by choice) and that time is devoted to family (oh, and the oh-so-time-consuming restoration of our 1920 bungalow).

We've chosen to follow the attachment parenting model (with some personal tweaks) and are planning on "unschooling" all our kids. I'd like to hear from other dad's who are familiar with those concepts and are taking an active role in implementing them. (Maybe you guys are already around here talking about it but I haven't browsed all the forums yet to find out.)

I'm looking forward to joining the discussions here!

Welcome RobinsHero.

I am intensely interested in your choices and approaches to parenting. Sounds like you guys are being incredibly thoughtful about the process. Everybody around here will certainly benefit from your experiences.

I'm not sure how many attachment parenting or unschooling proponents we have on the site, but we have plenty of happy SAHDs, so there are lots of guys familiar with challenging traditional roles and assumptions about how to raise kids.

We would be very interested in hearing how it has gone for you.

Maybe we should start threads for both attachment parenting and unschooling.

Hey RobinsHero,

Welcome to Dadlabs!

I think schooled and unschooled families alike have a lot to learn from the discussions coming out of the unschool movement. In some way I think it has the potential to influence education reform.

Looking to have many more conversations with you about it.

While Austin has a core group talking about it, I think Portland has an even more active community around it.

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
