TOPIC: Getting the trike

Getting the trike

MiL bought Duncan a tricycle for his birthday. We live on a very narrow lot on a major street (35mph speed limit, 50+ avg speed, Major route for hospital emergency traffic) and our alley is pretty busy. We could probably clock three or four vehicles a day going over 30mph, even though they have to weave between utility poles. We have a small parking area next to our garage, but it is about 15' wide, has a Trailblazer parked there and has a 25° pitch into the alley. So, learning to ride the trike at home is out.

Anyone else limited for the bike riding space? How did you get your kids tire time?

We live on a clu-de-sac, so it isn't much of a problem for us, but we were running errands one day and saw something we plan on using some day. Two parents sitting in lawn chairs reading books in the middle of an elementary school parking lot while their kids were having the time of their lives cruising around the parking lot, and the parents were in mental vacation mode.

We went to the neighborhood basketball court to learn and try out the training wheels.

We've got tennis courts across the street that we might be able to try. The problem is getting there when no one wants to play tennis.

As a Tennis player I would say its not a good idea to take them while someone is playing. I'm talking from a perspective of a regular who doesn't yet have a kid yet(expecting one) so take it from that perspective. I'm always afraid that the kids would run onto the court and get hurt. Kids tend to chase balls and can get into the court. Also Tennis players are very picky about getting disturbed in the middle of a point.

If each court is clearly separated by fence or partial fence then it should not be a problem. Its also a fun sport to pick up if you have it across the street. You could put him in some lessons soon so he can use the courts the right way

We certainly wouldn't be doing it while anyone was there. There are two sets of courts and one seems to be the overflow. The High School doesn't use it when they play their matches at the park. So we'll probably relegate ourselves to the back courts when we finally get weather worthy of riding.

Austin is lucky to have a lot of paved bike trails that have snow cone stands nearby.

We have been trying to take some sort of bike or trike trip on weekends and the more we do it the less onerous it seems to put the stuff in the car.

We also are big fans of the elementary school that has a multipurpose court that is shaded by a massive blue tarp structure a la cirque de soliel. That is the best for us since there is so much sun here.

We also use a bike trailer and a third wheel a lot. The kids love both.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
