TOPIC: That's Gross

That's Gross
Way back in the day, after a long night of revelry, I would often dine on cream of potato soup and tuna fish mixed together and prepared on a hot plate in my college dorm. It was quite tasty! To my delight, my 3 year old daughter shares my fondness for unique mixes of foodstuffs. Her 2 favorites are raw carrots dipped in ketchup and cheetos dipped in apple juice. The best part about these combos: 50% veggie and fruit!

What strange food combos do your kids prefer?

I don't know about combo's, but my son likes to dip it with any food he has and any sauce, gravy or dressing he finds on the table. Sometimes this can turn out pretty gross (in my opinion), but as long as he's eating, I'm happy.

For my son, (age 5) it's all about avoiding sauces. For example, he'll eat all of the prepared ingredients of a lasagna separately, minus the tomato sauce and ricotta filling. Not a major deal, we just hold some ingredients in reserve during assembly. The confounding part like most 5 year olds -- he loves pizza. Go figure.

The other quirk - he wants to control his own sauce portions. If I grill chicken, he'll eat plain chicken that he can dip in barbecue sauce on the side. He won't eat the chicken off the grill, if I brush the sauce on in advance. Ah well.

There's a control thing going on there, I'm sure. It's one of those places where I don't mind granting it to him if he ultimately eats healthy.

We pulle dout the ketchup for pancakes before a recent airplane trip. Syrup would have been too messy, and she loved the combo anyway.

I guess ketchup counts as a vegetable.

EyeDropper "Art": This really doesn't need to turn into an art activity but it's an added component for art and science. I provide ice cube trays; fill some of the slots partially full with water and color 3 of the water slots with primary colors. Then I give them an eyedropper and they mix the colors to their content. When you provide a coffee filter...even when the children mixed all their colors to brown...they'll see the colors seperate onto their coffee filter. Very neat...you can make butterflies or just glue to a complentary color of construction paper.

I just asked my seven and five year old if they would like ketchup on pancakes and their response was "silly daddy, no" I think I have to agree despite my love of the red condiment.

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
