TOPIC: What's Better Than Sibs Being Kind?

What's Better Than Sibs Being Kind?
7 Months, 1 Week ago
Is there a better moment for a parent than seeing the kids being genuinely kind to one another? We see them scrap and argue and fight and they drive us nuts in the process. But sometimes, when the chips are down, the kids are nice to each other in a way nobody else can be.

My daughter is struggling right now. She's all tween, dealing with a new middle school and tough academics and everything else. She's prickly. And last night was a tough one for her and her parents. She wasn't speaking to us. And despite having been to back-to-back sports practices, she wouldn't accept any of our offers of food.

My teen son, my 14-year-old boy, stepped into the kitchen and whipped up a batch of couscous (her favorite), picked out some yogurt and some fruit, turned out the light in the dining room and set a place, like for a skittish cat. She quietly came to the table and ate. And I was fighting back tears in the next room. It was just about the sweetest thing I'd ever seen.

Have there been times that your kids have been kind that have warmed your heart in a similar way?

THIS is precisely the kind of thing that makes me want another kid. Not for me, but for TheBoy.

Great story DC. Thank you for sharing it!

My 3yr old and 7yr old fight constantly but at the oddest times can be extremely considerate of each other.

My oldest recently had a birthday, and with the money he got, instead of spending it all on himself, he decided he would also buy his brother lunch and a toy.

I love being surprised by moments like those. It makes me so proud.

Couldn't agree more @dougj.

Had another one this AM. Wilson plays in a drumline that is performing at his old elementary school. The school where Cooper attends 3rd grade. On the ride to school this morning he was really excited -- demonstrating how he was going to whoop for his brother.

They are six years apart and have a pretty peaceful relationship. Still it was pretty dang cute.
