TOPIC: How to Talk About the Birds and the Bees?

How to Talk About the Birds and the Bees?
3 Years, 4 Months ago
I'm going to have to give the sex talk soon. Or start the sex dialog would probably be a healthier way to put it. Maybe not tonight, maybe not this month, but soon. My oldest is only ten, but there are certain behavioral and physical precursors that are telling me that the time is coming. It sort of breaks my heart to think that my little guy is big enough to need this information, that that complexity is coming his way. Life is just simpler and easier before puberty. I think we can agree on that.

I also dread my performance as sex talk giver. It's not my strength, being a tad on the prudish side. I want to be relaxed and informed and seem easy to talk to on the subject. Fat chance.

So what are the constituent part of a good first sex talk? Do I need to talk plumbing? And what kind of talk did you get? Would you do it the same or differently? What are the current supporting materials? I may contact some experts here.

After seeing Daddy Owen's video on not not trying, I'd think he might have a few pointers for you. Perhaps he and Jodi could even take care of the chat for ya! They seem very knowledgeable.

I don't envy you. At least you'll be talking to a boy and not a daughter. If that makes it any easier.

One of my favorite jokes is that with a boy... you have to worry about one penis... With a girl, you have to worry about ALL of them!

I had basic public school sex ed... 6th and 7th grade I think... then my Dad started to talk to me when I was a freshman, IN COLLEGE! I just stopped him and laughed... You're a little too late for THAT talk Pop. But I'll always be safe, that's all you need to know. It was funny. (for me, not so much for him)

This is one thing I certainly don't look forward to. I feel I pretty much figured out the relationship part of it all well enough on my own, but I also know that very few do. The mechanics are easy (I hope), it's the whole lovey dovey part that's difficult as hell to explain (without sex even). So at the risk of embarrassing the hell outta your boy, let us know how it goes Daddy Clay. Def. seems like an appropriate time to invite some more experts to sound off in the forum, or even in the Lab.

We were wondering about a program our church has that starts at kindergarten. From what I can tell it starts with talking about appropriate and inappropriate touching and progresses through High School when it evolves into THE SEX TALK. Knowing how the church operates, I suspect that there is a parental part to the education program so we know what's going on. We've got a while to prep for all of it, but sometimes I wonder. Duncan sure does draw in the available (and often unavailable) ladies already and seems to have a preference for pretty people.

Anyway... I don't remember the talk, the first time. But I do remember when my father was involved in my laundry one day and we had another talk. I was 13 and working at a restaurant (not knowing I was four years too young for what I was doing as head short order chef). I'd cut myself on the line. Because they were a bear to keep on, I had a pocket full of finger cots which looked like little condoms. You rolled them up over your finger and the bandage to keep everything sanitary. Well, of course he didn't have any idea what they were really for and decided it was time to re-emphasize the basics. He was quite embarrassed.

+1 on Owen and Jodi, though. You could sell that as a new Instructional DVD, I'm sure.

My son is 8 and we already had our starter talk. My wife and I have always told all of our children the truth about where babies come from (especially since it made them realize that Daddy had something to do with it) so he knew what happened, he just didn't comprehend how the transfer of fluids happened. The look on his face when he made the connection that his mom and dad do that was priceless.

We felt we needed to really talk to him because of all the bad touching concepts that kids get hit with so much lately. He is in Cub Scouts and it seems the whole organization is freaked out about it so there are a lot of times where it is discussed. He was asking questions about, Why is that bad touching? We felt we needed to explain the sexuality behind making a baby and why some people might use sex in a harmful way.

The hard part is going to be talking with my girls. The hard part is going to be that I don't want them to ever be dupped by some boy into thinking sex equal love just so he can get some.

Something popped into my head last night. I was out and about on a trip not too long ago, walking around the city. As I was walking to find some dinner, I came to wait at a crosswalk. While we were all waiting for the light to change, the kid standing behind me must've taken notice of the adult store near the opposite corner of the intersection, because he asked his dad can we go in the adult bookstore? Obviously he got a quick and curt NO!, which was followed by a what do they have in the adult bookstore? It's a good thing I was standing in front of them, because I just about couldn't contain the laughter. Still, I'm glad I wasn't his dad.

My wife tells me that her sex talk was quick. Her mom told her to take an aspirin and try to keep it between her knees! My stepdad pretty much told me to use a rubber and have a good time. I'd imagine that the happy medium is somewhere in between those two talks!

Still, you're probably better off getting to it now. I think I must've been at least 15 when my dad tried to give me the talk on the way to school one morning. I kinda rolled my eyes and thought to myself...uh...yeah...I know most of this already.

My parents gave me the Whats happening to my body book. It sounds cheesy but it was a good book. I could use it for some of the weird questions that occurred, like What if you pee during sex?.

I have a long time to go before I will need to talk about it with my son-to-be, but I want to treat it like any other change. Its really no different from growing taller or getting your permanent teeth. My parents made it seem like some HUGE DEAL and that stressed me out.

Well. The talk I got from my mom at 8 was Wear a Condom. that was it cut and dry. I had no idea at 8 what a condom was. Now that I have an older teen who is pretty smart. I figured I would be a bit more forth coming and try to keep open communications. Well in theory that is a good idea... but now he is a hound on the loose. I'm not sure I've had any positive or negative impact but so far he is being open and honest about what he thinks and how he feels. I'm just hoping he doesn't make me a granddad any time soon.

Though I shouldn't have the experiance for some years I'm already trying to think kid here. I have a Christmas version of the stork story I've been working on for when my boy gets old enough. Something along the lines of...

Santa parks his sleigh on top of mom's house, slides down the chimney and deposits presents under the tree, and later we opened present and that's where he came from. A gift from Santa. That way when he's old enough to figure out that there is no Santa and that it's actually dad bringing the gifts, it will all come together and he'll sorta just know. Two tricky subjects tackled in one shot. Hopefully it will not cause him to have to go to therapy.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
