TOPIC: Mom and Dad weight loss contest?

Mom and Dad weight loss contest?
1 Year, 8 Months ago
I am thinking about having a weight loss contest with my wife.

Is it even appropriate to bring up the topic? Could this do more harm than good?

I am not saying she needs to lose weight, she said it. So I am safe, right?

"Honey, it will give us something to talk about, to do together.

What are the rules?

That didn't work even when before we had a baby. I tried "Lead by example" didn't work. I stay very active.
Now she is pregnant with our first baby. No matter how nicely you put it they are going to read it as "You are fat" She responds to being healthy for the baby and avoiding complications. You could try a variant. Let me know how it works out maybe someday I can try it.

I THINK YOU CAN DO IT JUST FIND THE RIGHT WAY TO DO IT THE RIGHT WORDS RIGHT TIME IF YOU REALLY WANT TO DO IT AND PUT AN EFFORT NOT TO HURT HER FEELINGS OR MAKE HER THINK YOUR SAYING SHE'S FAT. WATCH THE BIGGEST LOOSER TOGETHER IT'S A GOOD FAM SHOW .. IT'S ON HULU FREE .. IT MIGHT GET HER TO WANNA WORK OUT JUST BY WATCHING SOME REAL OBESE PEOPLE WORK OUT .. IF YOU REALLY WANT A HEALTHIER FAMILY YOU'LL TELL HER AND TRY TO MAKE HER UNDERSTAND. SHE'LL DEF. B MORE CONSCIOUS ABOUT HER EATING HABITS .. AT LEAST .

I think something like saying that to spend more time together you want to do the C25K or go to a gym or take a Tai Chi class or something fitness oriented together. Make it a challenge for you, as a couple, to reach some goal, like fitting into clothes from 1996 or having a total combined weight of less than 333 pounds.

There really isn't a way to use a race as a challenge without being somewhat offensive, even if in a good way.

Daddy T I think you are thin ice with this, a very narrow and treacherous path and one mis-step and it's into the abyss with you. However, I think you have been given an opportunity for mutual working out. Why don't you and the Missus train with some common goal in mind, run a race together, finish a long hike, reach a certain body fat %, but I would stay away from contest. Liz has begun a work out program and now I need to as well. Maybe we can have a couples goal. The 4 of us run to the Lost Pines Hilton and then enjoy a relaxing weekend. Who wants to watch our children?

So what allowed us to have a weight loss contest at DadLabs among us guys, but its not ok to talk about with our partners. Is it a gender thing? And if so, should we ask our partners to be less sensitive to the topic?

Yep, it was the lack of uteruses.

Personally, hearing "dont be so sensitive" normally makes me feel even more so because not only am I feeling bad about whatever I'm being sensitive about, I also feel like I'm being a big baby. The best way to go about it is to suggest spending time together by doing something fun and active, like what ben said.

BAAAAD IDEA!!!!! and one more !

Two things:
1. Men loose weight faster than Women (its just science)
2. If you don't so you can keep the peace then you're not doing yourself any favors.

Having said that my wife and I are going to do an intense workout program "TOGEATHER" that part being the most important. We've set up the basement and picked up the DVD's and a second hand Giant TV.

Got our pilates bands and stability balls. Sorry fellas I may even wear leg-warmers if it need be.

We set a date Sunday June 13th and we are going to do the P90X program.

I will be keeping a blog at some location that I haven't started yet. So I can post a link here once we're off to the races "Togeather".

Even with this togeatherness exrcising is a very personal thing and we had our differences. I'm going full out (Diet plan, Multi vitamin and suppliments, she is not sold on that and just thinks working out and "eating right" will do the trick.

Definitely a topic that has been on my mind lately. I could stand to lose about 40 pounds, though the wife could lose even more than that. I think it's difficult to broach the subject with women since they are constantly bombarded with weight/image in everything they see and do.

That said, I have been slowly trying to figure out how to get the wife on board with working out/weight loss. She bristles at the subject of diet, seems to be the natural reaction for an overweight woman. So, I have been thinking over the working out options while stealthily making more healthy meals at home. We used to work out together years ago, but now it's a question of time and motivation. I'm thinking of buying us a gym membership or something similar for her birthday in August. Hope it works, cause I need a partner to help me get motivated!

Dude, come on. If overweight women bristle at the idea of diets, why do they spend billions of dollars on them?

OK Guys -- I'm gonna come at this from another direction entirely. It's got nothing to do with gender. It's all about that person/partner making the decision that they want to get in shape, lose weight whatever.

My wife has been doing karate 3x a week now for 2+ years. To the point that she's now a brown belt, and a part time instructor. In that same two year period, I've watched her go to every session and NEVER once remotely felt the inclination to get involved. Despite the fact that I know I've easily got 60 pounds to get rid of and we used to karate together back in college and I enjoyed it tremendously at the time.

Then last April came around and I decided I needed to lose 40 lbs by the end of November when I turn 40. In the last 3 months, I've dropped 20 pounds through better diet, mountain biking, yoga and simple calisthenics. I completely applaud my wife's patience and tolerance for watching my physique slide for the last 10 years and not trying to push better diet or fitness on me. I would have bristled, fought back and resisted everything.

Speaking for myself, I had to come to the decision to be healthier on my own. No one else can do the exercise or eat (or not eat as the case may be) the food for me. The whole self-image, body perception is so personalized and individualistic that I think it's an endeavor that has to be taken on alone.

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
