TOPIC: Biz Travel: Does Destination Matter to Your Wife?

Biz Travel: Does Destination Matter to Your Wife?
2 Years, 4 Months ago
DadLabs recently traveled to the ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas, and it's raised a question in the office: does your wife have a different attitude toward your business travel is it is to someplace "fun" like Vegas or Orlando? The ABC Baby Expo is an important annual event, one where we see tons of gear and meet lots of people, but because it takes place in Las Vegas our wives sometimes have a bit of the attitude of "suuuuure you were working hard."

Does this ever happen to you? Do you get charged even more brownie points if you are going to a resort destination for your conference? Even if you never see the light of day?

I think its what occurs in the absence of daylight in Vegas which is the issue there daddy clay! A place more reknowned for its nocturnal distractions. Disneyland for grownups, if you will. Perhaps a more child orientated location for the expo might have helped your case there.

In our experience it hasn't been a concern. Since being married I traveled to Temecula, CA (wine region), Las Vegas, and a few places like Monroeville, PA. I think what makes the biggest difference for us is that my wife travels to exotic destinations like Juarez, Mexico , for work. Now, when she leaves me at home with our son for a full week and her flights are delayed, there's trouble, but it's never due to the destination. Both of us having been there. We know that business travel may have perks, but they take it out ahead of time and well beyond your "time card". Shoot, Vegas... You save money when you gamble by not going to the shows. That's where they get you, now.

I pity you guys who have to explain this stuff to your wives. You certainly can't fly there and show them.

I had a thought about this today. While I don't envy my wife much abut her career and the "average day" at work has no perks of any kind, I've found one envy. I'm a Stay-At-Home-Dad. Most days I struggle to get my boy to eat lunch without putting half of it in his hair and on the floor. His lunch starts at 11 and if I'm not escorting the munchies into the pit of doom, I'm trying to catch up on some dishes, get dinner started, or clean up some fiasco from breakfast. When my wife comes home and says that a vendor rescheduled a lunch-time meeting for a restaurant, I get a bit jealous. It always seem to happen on days when lunch isn't in the cards for me. Shoot, showers are hardly in the cards anymore. But it's the "executive lunch meetings" that I truly envy.

She could fly off to Vegas, Orlando, Madrid, or Havanna and I'd still probably still just want to have a simple lunch.

I can say that the loneliest I ever found myself was a day spent in the ESPN Zone on the Disney World Boardwalk. Checked out of my $400 room in the Boardwalk Hotel and sat in the ESPN Zone watching the US Open (The Williams sisters were playing a final or semifinal). I was a few yards from the back entrance to Epcot for something like 6 hours. That's what business travel means to me. There's a reason why the company I worked for gave you an extra meal to expense on your family when you got home.

@Ben I've had lunch at that ESPN Zone (I was with extended family, so the opposite of lonely). I completely get it. If it's any comfort, at DadLabs we all eat at our desks.

Told my wife about this thought and she came home early the next day with her leftovers from a vendor lunch. Didn't mean it to be a guilt trip. But I didn't turn it away, either.

By the way, I think you guys may be underestimating the masculinity of having the Baby Expo in Louisville. After all, that's the location of the world's largest truck show. My wife's company launched a truck there a few years ago with a Lyle Lovett concert, Large Band and all. Only one manager from the company sat to listen. The rest of the people were crawling around in a big rig. Between the Bourbon, Louisville Slugger, and Churchill Downs tours, they have some really cool places to visit, some great beer, and a killer skate park. One of our geocache finds took the prize, though. That's not our log, by the way. I don't think we took photos back in 2005 when we visited.

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
