TOPIC: New Ipod Nanos for Video?

New Ipod Nanos for Video?
1 Year, 11 Months ago
Anyone have one of the new generation Ipod Nano's that has the video cam feature?

I'm looking for an inexpensive vid camera that isn't bulky and can upload to the net quick - and is tapeless.

I've checked out the Flip and Sony pocket cams...but the Nano seems like a decent option given it will also play some music and podcasts.

Thoughts???

My wife has one. It works, but because of the size and weight (see the thread about Steady Cams) the video will be shaky without a lot of effort. I'm not sure you'll have a lot of space to save video, either. My wife also says that the lens is in an inconvenient place. She covers it frequently on accident. My complaint is that it takes a lot of conversion to use it with other video and the aspect ratio isn't the same as my other cameras, so you get a resizing effect when you try to create a montage.

You can see the different video in my birth video.

I looked into the Nano also but ended going with the Kodak Zi8. I'm pretty happy with it.

I bought a new iPod with video because I sweated all over my old one and fried the backlight (TMI?).

I like the bigger screen and some of the features on the new iPod, but I have not yet even tried to use the video camera. Most of the time that I hope to grab a vid, I have my iPhone with me and I use that.

I also think that it's easy to forget to shoot in landscape, and I'm not sure what most editing software and monitors do with vid that is shot in portrait orientation, know what I mean?

Shoot. I was thinking the Nano might be the perfect option for our daughter. My wife and I were considering buying one of the new Nanos to use to play music in her room or in the car, and then to use for video when we wanted it. It sounds like most of you are pretty lukewarm on the nano as a video camera. What would you recommend as a better option? We've looked at the Flip cameras, and I like them but my wife doesn't think they'd be reliable enough or steady enough. We'd rather avoid the full camcorder if possible, and an iPhone or other smart phone isn't really an option, as we're trying to save some money by going with a prepaid wireless plan. Any other suggestions?

You really want something you can put on a tripod or whatever they call the single pole mounts. The full-blown cameras really aren't that expensive and certainly aren't like what my parents had to use. The extra features and flexibility will pay off. I think the Flips do everything, by the way. Just look through the features and maybe take a look at CNET's reviews.

But the iPod Nano isn't bad. I just wouldn't buy it AS your video recording device. It's just a convenient "don't want to miss this" feature.

I wouldn't dismiss the iPod yet. The multi-purpose nature of the device makes it really appealing for what you are going to use it for. I just haven't used mine for video yet, mostly because I use my iPhone. I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes.

I use my iPhone when I'm out and about to do spontaneous video. I don't know that it's what I'd want to use to record permanent memories of special occasions, but the quality is certainly 'good enough' when they spring something unexpected on you, or you don't want to carry around extra bits on the go.

I know this thread is 7 months old, but if anyone new is looking into this... I have done a lot of research.

Personally I am a go HD or go home kinda guy. You want to future proof a video especially since we are in the middle of a format change for all television! SD is just a waste of money.

The new iPod touches, Nanos, iPhone all shoot HD video now. If you have a kid who likes to get dirty CHECK THIS OUT.

The Go Pro Hero ($250 - which is a STEAL for what you are getting)
www.goprocamera.com/videos/

the National Geographic shows I work on use this a lot. It's water proof. Which means you can let your kids take it in the pool, you can mount it on a bike, on a helmet. When your kids are at a really active age, you could make a bunch of videos with them, and have this camera that is virtually indestructible.

Because the camera is in a waterproof case, it doesn't pick up very good audio. So having another camera (camera1, camera2,camera1, camera2, camera1, camera2) would help if you want audio.

Imagine all the awesome videos you can make with your kid. Especially if you already own a iPhone 4, or new iPod Touch. If you have iMovie you could make really cool videos with your kids too.

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
