TOPIC: Facebook for babies

Facebook for babies
2 Years, 11 Months ago
Many of my friends are creating Facebook accounts for their new babies.

I am not talking about adding pictures of their babies to their own Facebook pages. But rather actual accounts for the infants themselves.

The different babies have friended each other, and are creating status updates and writing on each other's walls things like, "I love tummy time", or just, "goo goo, ga ga"

Everyone is asking when my wife and I will make a page for our 5 month old son.

To be honest it seems a little silly to me.

I understand using Facebook as a way of conveniently sharing the latest news, pictures, and videos with family and friends.

But does a 5 month old really need their own account?

There probably isn't a correct yes or no answer to your question. Does "your" baby need an account? If you think it is silly then, no. The Internet, and more specifically Facebook, is not the place for everyone and their children. I agree it seems a little goofy, but hey to each their own.

I have two thoughts on this post.

#1 Are they going to give the account over to the child? And when?

#2 And this is a little silly, but I'll say it anyway. The Internet saves everything! Who needs any kind of potential embarassments from digging through old posts on a Facebook account when you were a baby?

That's hilarious. I'm sure we would totally make a page for our baby (if she was still a baby).

I know that single friends can get seriously annoyed by all of the baby updates issued by a new parent. So maybe giving the baby their own facebook page is a good outlet to exercise the parental need to share, without forcing all of your single friends to "Hide" your regular status updates.

I would urge you to make a page for the kiddo. Technically, making an account violate the terms of service. But a page can do most of what an account can do. Then you can segment your FB stuff for the baby.

I think it's just silly. I talk about what's going on in my life on my facebook, and since I just had a baby, thats what I'm going to be talking about. If your friends hide your updates because they don't what to hear about the new joy in your life, they're aren't that good of a friend anyway.

I think it could certainly be pretty funny if handled right, but I'm not sure I'd want to have another account to have to keep track of. And I would be really, really sure that you have the notorious privacy policy settings where you want them.

The big concern about setting up a page for the kiddos for me would be privacy (ironic coming from me, I know).

By the way, I "like" Ben's kids.

I would make doubly sure that all privacy functions are in effect. One simple thing can be identity theft, and cyber criminals are out in force. While not Facebook direct, I've heard of people growing up and finding out they have terrible credit, because someone knew enough to open an account under them and run it rampant when they were babies! Not to be paranoid, just be careful.

Yep, I have a job where personal life op-sec is key. I do have facebook, but utilize the privacy functions to the fullest. Our babies will not have FB pages.

The wife and I went round and round about this. She said no to twitter and facebook accounts... which after some time I completely agree with now. It does violate the terms of service on Facebook. Personally, I don't want another account to manage as I already have two, one for me personally, and one for my daddy blog, and probably soon one for work.

It does sound really fun to do that I just can't imagine trying to keep up with the facebook page, blog, and the kid all at once!

The whole idea of setting up a facebook for a baby seems ridiculous to me. Post photos and updates of your kids on your own page.

If there is a need to share why not create a Page like how businesses do for your Baby and manage the page from your own account? Creating an account for the baby seems a bit much.

I actually heard that facebook is going to put a stop to such pages. People have been making pages for their pets and such and I heard (rumor or not) that each person's page was going to have to be verified and somebody of the right age and species to use FB. Whether it has happened or happening I'm not 100% sure.
