How to photograph your own children

I came across this article about how to photograph your own children.

Any other hints?

Great... TWO more blogs I plan to read regularly... and those have tons of links too... curse you interwebby thingy! (Thanks for sharing DaddyTroy.)

I'll simply add, shoot from kid-level. And always have a camera nearby. Take one with you everywhere. Oh, and of course, dig it out and RTFM.

Slighty related sidenote: (because I saw a photo contest posted on one of those blogs)

Be very cautious about entering photos, particularly photos of your children, in photo contests. If you read the fine print of the terms of entry, you will find 99% of those contests are "rights grabs." As in, EVERY entry (not just winners) gives up complete and total control of the photo submitted. What does that mean? That means the adorable photo you entered of your kid with cereal dumped on his head could end up on a billboard with zero compensation and there's nothing you can do about it.

Well, I'm new to my DSLR so this may be a bit basic for you guys but I love the tips and info here. Especially because I really enjoy candids, I find in the long run you enjoy the photos more.

One of the hints in the article that jinky mentions is to manipulate shutter speed. Anyone who is new to SLRs or even if you have a point and shoot, learning to go manual really changes the game. I also like mess around with the shutter speed priority. Once I found that I am pretty good at holding still for up to 1/15 of a second in the right conditions, I could set shutter priority for that and get better pix in low light. Of course not always of my kids unless they were asleep.

Have a way to get them smiling or laughing. Have a decent SLR that is good to go so you don't lose the moments. Take many pictures. Experiment. Try candid pics. Natural smiles and laughs are way better than cheeseeee....

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
