Good Pic = Your never in any one of them
1 Year, 8 Months ago
I enjoy taking pictures with my DSLR. But I have come to realize that taking good pictures means that your hardly in any of the pictures!!

The wife doesn't know how to take good pictures and just does some obligatory snaps of you out sometimes out of focus.

Unless you also have another friend your going out with who is also into taking good pictures. What are your experiences with this and how do you photodads get into to the family pictures?

I have kids who are 8 and 5, and I still have to beg my wife to take a picture now and then, as in yesterday. And then I made the huge mistake of telling her how to do it better.

The only thing I have been able to do is to convince my kids to take pix. And while the pix are not pro, they surely are interesting.

So, in the end I have no real solution, and I feel your pain. In the photo record, its as if dad did not exist.

Pics are cool, but I am not a guy who carries around a camera. When I do, I have too many photos that look the same, and am not in any or many of them either.

I wish I had more photos/videos, but appreciate the ones I do have for when a friend has their camera then emails them later. There is no solution to making sure the photographer takes a good photo. Just sit back and hope that they get the right shot. Besides, imho, the best photos are those action shots that you never expected. Those cant be staged or scripted.

One downside of carrying an SLR -- other folks are intimidated to use it, even though most are as simple to use as a point and shoot. A quick glance through our summer vacation photos reveals that I was not there.

Maybe invest in a tripod -- use the timer on the camera?

On exception: I once wrote a feature article for a glossy national magazine and they asked me for several photos. I sent in my head shots, and on a whim, forced my wife to snap a picture of me with the kids in the backyard, to add something homey to the array.

It is, to this day, the only picture she has ever taken. And they picked it. And printed it 750,000 times.

One thing to do with a SLR is put it on Livemode some SLR's have this so they can see the LCD rather than viewfinder.

I also bought a IR remote for SLR its really cheap like ~$15 maybe I can do the clicking remotely to avoid shutter shake.

I also encourage the machine gun approach by having her shoot multiple exposures hoping one of those pics might be ok.

If you want to go the tripod route there is a nice small Gorrillapod I have used for handhelds which worked great when we went on vacations and didn't want to beg people to take pictures of us. They have a bigger one for SLR's also. But I would be afraid to use it on my SLR.

Well, in our family it's Mummy (Me) that is the photographer. My husband is about as tech savvy as the Amish. I don't mind so much around home but I would like to be featured in holiday snaps at least. Whilst tooling around on the net the other day, I found this totally cute little device for travelling, that's easier to carry then a tripod. While I certainly wouldn't trust it with my beloved Olympus e620, it's perfect for a point and shoot. www.dynomighty.com/product_detail.php?Bo...miscellaneous+DY-301

I have a Gorillapod for my SLR and I've never worried about it falling over. I have the one specifically for heavy SLRs, though.

I know you love your SLR but sometimes it is great to have a point and shoot, too. I bought a little Canon camera and it is so easy for anyone to use and the pictures always turn out great (probably even as good as my big camera). Mine was the top of the line Canon P&S so I can't say the same for the lower models.

Also, I really love this: www.amazon.com/Quikpod-QPAK-COMPOD-Compo...294073966&sr=8-1

There are a few brands that make them. Some can hold SLRs but they are better for P&Ss. Great way to take pics of you and the kids together. And it is compact enough to carry in your camera bag or clip to your belt loop. And it is a quicker set up than a big tripod or a gorillapod.

As a single photo-oriented parent, I feel your pain. It does take more planning, but you can do it! Here are the many ways I've worked around this:

1) tripod* + timer
2) tripod* + wireless remote
3) a good point and shooter with a flip-screen (ex: Canon PowerShot G12)
4) a friend / ask someone (maybe bring along a good point & shooter for them to use -- Canon PowerShot S95 or the G12).

These days if I'm going to be in the picture I mostly use my PowerShot G11, flip the screen out and take arms-length hand-held shots. With the G11/G12 you can even do this without looking like you're holding the camera. Don't forget to look at the lens rather than the LCD though (this picture is a good example of me forgetting).

BTW: Take a look at the Evolution of Dad intro. That's us at 3:09 making pancakes. This was a tripod-mounted film SLR using an RF remote control (in my hidden hand).

* A tripod doesn't need to be a tripod. It could just as easily be a backpack, railing, large rock, picnic table, stroller -- whatever is available!

good luck!

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
