TOPIC: Flip Camcorders?

Flip Camcorders?

Does anyone have experience with the cheap Flip camcorders? I'm trying to decide if they would even be better than my Nikkon Coolpix L18 that also does video.

I still prefer my little point and shoot cannon powershoot still camera with video. And I really want to experiment with the iPhone GS, but cannot afford that one right now.

We use, on rare occasion, a SD flip camera for home video or video that requires a very very low profile. I have been impressed by the mic quality. Our SD version does not produce the best video in low light, but we have a pretty old one.

Let us know how you proceed!

I have a Flip Mino (non HD), a Canon Elph that shoots video, and a iPhone 3GS. Of all of those my Flip takes the best video and allows for the easiest upload, but it isn't the one I use the most these days. I use my iPhone to shoot video because I never forget to bring it with me and because it's pretty easy to use.

I think getting the Flip in HD would give it another step up over the others.

But I generally find that the key to home video of the kids is convenience, more than quality. I don't imagine my use of the Flip going up.

Also, have you checked out the new iPod Nano with video?

I've used the Flip Mino (non HD) and it is a pretty good unit. Very simple to use (which is important to me) provides a fairly good picture and is durable as a 1982 Volvo Station Wagon (mine ran for 356,987 before I even changed the oil). It' s a good deal for the price.

Thanks for the advice guys!
I looked into the Nano vs the Flip and I while wouldn't mind an extra Ipod it's just not what I need. Then I came across the Kodak Zi8 and CNET had some good things to say about it as compared to the Flip. So long story short I found that NewEgg.com had the the Flip UltraHD and the Kodak Zi8 for the same price so I chose the Kodak. Although I had to get an extra SD card I like that it has image stabilization and a macro mode. Hopefully it gets here before the kid does.

So I totally jinxed myself with this and my son was born early. I ordered it the night before my wife was diagnosed with pre eclampsia so it came a few days after he was born. Most of the videos so far are him lying still with a bewildered look on his face while his parents sound like idiots trying to get him to smile. But I have been using it for the last few months and I'm glad with my choice. It's really easy to use, it shoots really clear video with OK sound and slips right into the smallest pocket of the diaper bag. The best thing is the fact that I sprang for the 16 GB sd card. It will record a few hours of 1080p or 720p @ 60 fps. Which is way longer than I would need for now.

my brother in law uses the video camera with the ipod nano and has yet to complain...I think just capturing the moments is more important than the quality...think about the slides from the past - memories are in HD even if the slides/pics/video is not!

I'm on the board of a non-profit writer's organization and they were looking for a camera, so I donated my Flip to them (I can't donate much cash, so I do what I can). I miss it, but not all that much. I find that I use the iPhone to catch quick snippets, the footage is automatically added to iPhoto whenever I sync my phone. It also imports easily into iMovie, increasing the likelihood that I will actually edit and use it some day.

which cam did you buy that takes a memory card. I'm looking at the flip here and it only uses internal memory.

Rom, www.woot.com has a HD digital cam up right now... for $120... seems like a decent deal and cool cam. It takes SD cards as well. If I had the dough, I'd have this cam.

Only one deal a day though. If you don't get it today, you won't get it from woot.com.

I got the the Kodak Zi8. It's got some pretty great features. There's a good review with all the specs at Cnet.

I've been taking some vids with the iPhone, but my shakes are terrible! I'm notorious for this around here and haven't been allowed to hold a camera since Stockholm -- and it's even worse when using a flip vid and trying to shoot a subject that is farther away. My vids of my kids' games are unwatchable.

Any suggestions on how to stabilize these smaller cameras?

Well, the inherent problem with stabilization is that you kinda have to be PLANNING to shoot. And the iPhone and the minicams lend themselves so well to just tossing them in your pocket and go. So 'extra' equipment doesn't even cross your mind.

I believe the Flip and other minicams still have the standard threaded hole for a tripod. Yes, a tripod. It may look silly, but your game vids will be much more viewer friendly, even zoomed it.

Now your iPhone, ya just gotta hold still dammit! Sit down, rest your elbow on your leg or arm of the lawn chair. Pan SLOWLY, no herky jerky movements. (And a couple of shakes won't ruin all of your footage, just EDIT! Soooo many youtube vids are complete trash just because people don't edit out the completely unnecessary, and nauseating, footage.)

Do a search for "String Camera Stabilizer" for the super-simple-keep-it-in-your-pocket-with-the-camera-stabilizer. And also figure out a way to connect it to your iPhone. You'll be golden. Your family will thank you.
