Books on Parenting

Any suggestions on books about parenting, I know there are a lot of books about children up to year 1 but what about books for children 2 and up and how to raise them, discipline, child development etc.

A respected friend just gave us "Parenting from the Inside Out" by Siegel. My wife found it useful, but warned me it may not fully match my M.O. Full update next week.

Pre-adoption, my wife & I attended a series of workshops based on Foster W. Cline, M.D. & Jim Fay's Love and Logic. The program really clicked with us and we subsequently purchased a couple of the books and have been trying to apply the Love and Logic principles in our parenting.

The key tenet of Love and Logic is to offer children a range of age-appropriate and acceptable choices in order to experience the teaching value of their decisions. (That is, choices that are acceptable to the parent, so it isn't about letting 3 yr-olds choose whether they want to play in the street or the backyard.)

Faye & Cline encourage parents to let children experience the outcome of their choices in the early years, when the consequences of the inevitable less-than-perfect choices are not too severe or damaging. They believe that this will ensure that, by the time the child reaches adulthood, he/she is equipped with quality decision-making skills.

Y'know how frustrating kids' dawdling pacing can be, so it's not always easy to lay out choices and wait for our kiddo to make decisions, but so far, it does seem to have some payoff when we have the patience to stick with it.

We have found Hal Runkel's "Screamfree Parenting" to be useful and thoughtful and relatively BS free. I think "Babyproofing Your Marriage" is worth a read because your relations with your spouse can have a huge impact on your parenting (ask John and Kate and the 8). I've put Jeremy Adam Smith's book "The Daddy Shift" on my short list. This doesn't book doesn't really address parenting issues per se, but it helps dads to better understand the social context surrounding their work as parents.

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
