TOPIC: Your Thanksgiving Day Duties?

Your Thanksgiving Day Duties?
42 Years, 5 Months ago
How exactly do you do your share on Thanksgiving Day. Dad 1.0 just bellied up to the buffet, then plopped down on the sofa for a rigorous day of spectating. Things have changed. Haven't they? How do you divide the Thanksgiving Day responsibilities in your house? In Chez Daddy Clay, the wife loves to cook the meal -- she's been scouring the gourmet cooking magazines for weeks, so I'm not much help there. Wine (in and out of the box) and special cocktails are my bailiwick, as is the cleanup, though I usually have help. With the Horns now playing on T-giving, I do see a trainwreck coming. I'm going to have to clean like a dervish if I hope to peel off with Bubba to go to the game, and not get the most amazing Skunk Eye ever.

I set the table, eat the food, and tell my wife how wonderful her cooking is. I also assist in transporting the groceries from the car to the kitchen.

Since I do technically set the table, I probably qualify as Dad 1.1.

I'm pretty convinced that my wife wants it this way. She really does not appreciate me meddling in the kitchen. Similarly, I don't appreciate her meddling in my home improvement/renovation activities.

Once my daughter gets old enough, though, I'm definitely baling on the whole set the table thing

I'm brining a turkey now. I'll be making everything from scratch starting on Tuesday. I'm not making starters or desserts. But everything else is mine to do. But I enjoy it and I'm quite talented. I have already set my foot down, though. After the meal is done, I'm smoking a pipe and forgetting about everything else. No dishes for me. At least not on Thursday.

No home duties... we're always somewhere else... with the whole fam damily... the wife is the youngest of 6, and has nephews/nieces her age... her parents have 14 grandchildren... so it's a BIG event. I generally try to stay out of the way, will try to keep the kiddo(s) and doggie out of the way, move/set up tables and chairs when asked, and I usually take up everyone's empty plate at whatever table I end up at. I try to be helpful, but invisible.

I usually help with dishes at Christmas at my folks place. My bro and I jump on them and get them done quick.

DaddyClay- I'd take Wednesday afternoon and clean out the doghouse... yer gonna need it) And the worst part, you're teachin' Bubba it's ok to ditch family gatherings for football... tsk tsk... But it's the Longhorns honey. Good luck with that skunk eye DC. HA!

I get to hang with kids during meal prep time and then it's dish clean up duty for me, usually accompanied by numerous cold barley pops if you know what i mean.

I'm pretty darn lucky. My wife takes over where all food and dishes are concerned. My main duty during Thanksgiving is making seating happen, popping up when someone needs something, tending to the guests, saying grace, keeping the dogs out of the way. My wife and I have been having Thanksgiving dinner with our good friend (nearly family now) that comes over before turkey day and stays afterward. The girls do everything from the turkey to the pies. Then after turkey day, they're in the kitchen all day long making cookies and sweet stuff.

We are due in July and I'm thinking that this coming year I want to get one of those infrared turkey fryers and fry myself silly, perhaps have my buddies join me outside with some beers in hand, taking in some quality guy time -- while checking in with the fam and soaking in the awesomeness of the entire situation. I am not yet a father (I like that term 'due dad') but I am nearly shedding a tear thinking about all of this. Wow is all I can say. And the best part is, I have the best darn wife a guy could ask for.

When we do the T-day spread at home, I share it all with my wife - cooking and cleaning. When we're away, I help clean up.

Otherwise, wine and beer, some football, movies, Yahtzee, Scrabble, belly aches and gas

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
