Valentines day is coming up

Its a trap! You either spend two hours waiting for a table at a nice restaurant or you spend too much money on romance items. But you have to do a little something, right? Any suggestions that aren't so cliched that they make my grandmother roll her eyes? Or is the cliched stuff what the ladies like?

What can you even get a pregnant woman for valentines? Chocolate is out - gestational diabetes. Jewelry is out - who has the money with a baby on the way? Wine - nope. Flowers - well I don't have anything against flowers other than the cost for something that dies in 3 days.

Indeed it is a trap. I went with a USB turntable for transferring her old vinyl(read: BonJovi records) to MP3... Can't get much more romantic than that, right?

I plan to do a BonJovi concert at home while the kiddo is in daycare (on Friday, not actually Valentines Day). Candle light, DVDs, dancin', and I'm cookin'. Maybe even throw in the wedding vid. Will also give her a diaper free Saturday. All she has to do is bring me the boy, and I'll change him. Those usually are good for a couple browny points, especially with multiple brown diapers...

Send the kids to a babysitter and get a little one on one quality time is the hands down perfect first step. Can't go wrong with that.

Then cook up a little Bacon Explosion :

www.bbqaddicts.com/bacon-explosion.html

Lick your fingers and fix your eyebrows...

Catch a movie... and then prepare youself for a little nooki nooki. *

* Note: for this to work you'll probably have to gift or make access to ample amounts of chocolate, alcohol, and jewelery.

Let me start by saying that all of you have it all wrong. My wife and I celebrate our anniversary with a small gift and a meal out, alone. That's it. No Christmas gifts, no silly Valentines Day. We share a birthday, but it's a week before Christmas, so nothing too much for that either. With that in mind, I'll freely give advice out!

I've always said that a meal made by me is better than a meal out for a special occasion. I overheard two guys at Target talking the other day. The younger one was asking how much he should spend, total, on cards candy and flowers. The other guy said maybe a card, but go with the home made dinner thing. I agreed. Flowers die. Dinner out is expensive. If you make a meal at home - she knows you tried something special, and even if you don't get any nookie, at least you got a meal out of it.

And this is the one meal a year that the one-cooks-the-other-does-dishes rule does not apply. I think it's the cleaning of dishes that gets me more brownie points to cash in later.

I like Nik's idea of doing a lunch with the children at daycare/school. Bonus is that you've got a day at home sans child.

My wife has gestational diabetes too so no candy there, plus she's a teacher she gets way too many goodies from holiday parties as it is. We have about a month and a half before our son will be born so we are also trying to be frugal. We decided on getting a heart-shaped pizza, Pizza Hut makes a whole wheat pizza so she can have an extra slice without maxing out on her sugars and also probably rent a movie or two. My wife also loves when I brush her hair and of course, massaging her feet. Valentines should be more about being together not what you can buy her.

Nice! I agree with the homemade dinner idea. Inspiration struck last night - homemade, non-raw fish sushi. My partner loves sushi but hasn't had any for months. It involves me cooking with her and she gets a huge kick out of that too. It will cost a fraction of a dinner out too. Hell yeah.

I hit the Valentine's Day jackpot this year. My wife has to go out of town for the weekend for a bridal shower. So not only do I not have to buy a gift, I have the whole long weekend to spend with my son.

I'm still getting her a card though. Just to be on the safe side.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
