So what's on your kid's Christmas List?
3 Years, 8 Months ago
I've started making a list of stuff I think my kids would like for Christmas, they're not old enough to make their own lists yet. I know the questions about what they want/need will come soon so I'm getting ready. Part of this is due to the fact that I have ADD and if I don't make such a list my brain will go blank the moment someone asks me, and if I don't write stuff down the moment it enters my mind it's gone forever! /sigh

Anyway...

So far my list for the girls is:
Wooden puzzles
Board books
Hand puppets
Little People Farm
Radio Flyer Wagon
Oh, and thanks to today's Dadlabs episode a Learning Tower! Those things rock!!!

Any other suggestions for 18 month old twin girls? What's on your kid's Christmas list? Maybe we can pool our ideas!

Or do Dad's not think about this stuff? ha ha!

Well, that's true. I think about what I can buy for my daughter all the time, I don't wait or plan for Christmas.

I remember one July when I was six or seven, my dad was cleaning the garage and found the gifts he bought the three of us kids for the previous Christmas. I had just finished TBall, so the inappropriateness of getting a baseball T was lost on me until I was older.

I think we just started thinking about what to get our child. He'll be five months this weekend and eight months come Christmas. At that age, I think they think that every day is Christmas (at least for an only child). So it may just be a matter of holding some toys and other things back until December. But I think most of the things for him are more for our sanity so we may be punting come Dec 20th.

Oh yeah, we didn't get our girls anything last year. We figured they'd get enough toys from all the relatives.

Not think about this stuff? Are you kidding? One of the sweet joys of fatherhood is going out to the toy store after work (with no Mom around, BTW) and buying something for my daughter. (For any of you new Dads who haven't tried this yet, do it! And make sure Mom is both not around and not aware of what you are doing).

It's one of the few times I can be fiscally irresponsible and feel no guilt.

Anyway....on to the Christmas list....

We were really surprised when our daughter started playing with dolls and putting them to bed, taking them for walks, etc at about 18 months. (We inherited a baby doll stroller and baby doll pack-n-play from a co-worker). So I don't know if you've tried dolls with your girls yet, but we were really surprised at how quickly our little tomboy took to the dolls at only 18 mos.

I've got to wait a few years before I REALLY get excited about shopping for the boy for Christmas... I can't wait to have a reason to buy Legos, Tinker Toys, Kinex, etc. etc. I love dem toys! Oh, and action figures!! Woo hoo! I think it'd be too obvious if he got any of those this Christmas...

ha ha! I know, I catch myself wandering into the princess dress up section of the toy store to ooooh and aaah at all the fluff and glitz. I have to pull myself away saying, Not yet, not yet! lol

Another big ticket item I'm looking at is getting 2 toddler sized overstuffed arm chairs. They're so cute and I know my girls will use them a lot! Heck, I have one girl who is already crawling up onto our couch so she can watch TV in comfort. LOL... Terrible I know, but she wants to be on the soft comfie cushions and I can't really blame her so thought I'd get them some soft comfiness of their own. Anyone else own chairs like this for their kids? How many years of use would you say they got out of them??

Even though this'll be his first one, we're planning on keeping Christmas kinda low-key for our son. Really, he gets more fun out of pushing his stuffed animals around in the empty laundry basket as he does with any of his toys, so...

Still, he has developed a real affinity for wooden puzzles lately, so we'll probably grab a couple more of those and my wife bought a large box of gently-used board books off of eBay earlier this week so we can trickle in some new reading materials. (Goodnight Moon is starting to get really old, y'know!)

Oh, and I bought a little wooden train set at Ikea last month that I've got stashed away for Santa to deliver.

Nothing. Nada. We don't buy our daughter gifts for occasions - birthday or Christmas. We have two very generous families, and we're asking them to be sensible when it comes to gift giving this year for the holidays. On her birthday we were so overwhelmed that it's actually a bit embarrassing to looking in our living room.

We're learning to be more minimal when we shop and buy things for our family. (Guess we've been hurting financially since WAY before congress and the president noticed this week!)

My wife and I are putting off the santa conversation. Our daughter is only 15 months old, so I think we have another year until we need to come to consensus.

My wife has started tossing around the idea of getting one of those wooden train sets to go around the Christmas tree - and for playing with after the holidays too, of course. I've read that the wooden track-based sets are more durable and easier for little fingers to get the trains back onto. I've read good things about the Brio brand and some seem to like the ones at Ikea, although i noticed that those have plastic connector inserts instead of wooden connectors. Can someone who's actually tried some of these options steer me in the right direction? Are there other brands that are even better? And is this stuff really sturdy enough to hold up to a fidgety 2 year old who's more Godzilla than Bob the Builder?

We are getting Owen, our 14 month old, a rocking horse. My mother is getting him a kitchen play set (boys can cook too!) and that's enough for us. I'm sure everyone else will pile on the toys though. We already have too many. Too many I say!

Our Daughter will be around 6 months at Christmas. We plan on buying some stuff, but not that much. She really likes the little soft cloth books, so we may get her some of them. My wife and I have talked about getting a couple toys, but we would rather save and get her something a little more on her first birthday.

We have also talked to the grandparents and have actually tried to get them to spend a little less on toys and add some money to college fund instead. I know it will hard for them to not buy toys, but we also need help and thought it would be good especially since we don't have the space for a bunch of toys in our house.

Even though I have said this I am sure that we will go way overboard instead. We always seem to do that, but hopefully we will scale down for the first year. We really want to do more next year when she understands opening presents more.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
