TOPIC: Home vs Away

Home vs Away
2 Years, 3 Months ago
We have Grandparents spread across the United States. One Grandma is in Texas, another set in South Carolina and another set in New Mexico. Everybody wants to spend time with the Grandchildren over the Holidays. A full family gathering of all parties in one central location is out of the question, so how do you keep everyone happy including yourself? Tell me about your holiday travel plans. I'm interested.

Her parents get Thanksgiving, my parents get Christmas. And that's only because I don't have a house big enough to host... I have hopes to one day say, we are not leaving the house this Thanksgiving/Christmas. If you want to see us, or the kid(s), you have our address.

We thought we would alternate years, but my Dad wigged on us because we weren't around for Christmas, as if it were a surprise(after spending Thanksgiving with them). And her family is huge, so we're not generally missed too bad... lots o' distractions.

Alternating really is the only way... but I firmly believe those WITHOUT lil' kids should be the ones expected to travel. (ie: Grandma and Grandpa!) They can pack an overnight bag a helluvalot easier than we can!

My parents are right around the corner from us, 8 miles to be exact. They get Thanksgiving and just about everything other than Christmas. They know they're lucky, and are understanding, so they don't fuss when we haul the kids 600 miles to upstate NY to spend Christmas proper at my in-laws.

Would love like Nik to be able to say, "you know what? The holidays are at my house this year, ya'all c'mon down." But we don't have that kind of space either.

This was the first year we did not have to travel for either holiday. It's gotten so bad that we're moving to be closer to another family unit to help alleviate some of the early stress. Ugh.

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
