Father's Day Gift Ideas? 2011 edition
Clueless loved ones want to know: what make for a truly awesome Father's Day gift? We get asked this question every year. This year we are just being a little more open about stealing ideas from the community -- so fork them over guys. We need ideas for great Father's Day gifts, and we need them now. Stuff. Activities. Services. You can even say "a hand written note" and nobody is going to call you on it.

We will put together a top ten ideas list and give you FULL CREDIT, as long as our remaining integrity stays in tact until F-day.

Last year my wife made me a coupon book. Yes...a coupon book, it was nice. I really liked it. One of the "coupons" was for me to pick out a dart board for manland. I also got a "Father" picture frame with one of my favorite pictures of me and my son in it.

We are always on a tight budget so I appreciated that she didn't just buy something for the sake of buying something. I would love an Ipad, PS3, big screen TV and etc and ect. But really, we probably couldn't afford any of those.

My garage manland hasn't really materialized yet but I do have a dart board. So, I have that going for me, which is nice. Maybe this year I'll actually spend some time out there.

A great big vacuum sealed canister of Tim Horton's coffee.

(edit: don't put this on your top ten list, this is a personal addiction, not something for everyone. Once you get the Timmy Ho's needle in your arm, it does not come out)

Big ticket items aren't usually called for on Father's Day, but anybody looking to gift me something need look no further than the new Nike Sport watch. I would completely geek on this thing.

My power washer also crapped out. Could use one of these bad boys from Dirt Devil that I saw at the Home and Housewares Show.

But that's also high end.

From the "Might Actually Get It" file.

Bottle of Old Rip Van Winkle (Asleep in the Wood).

Fancy running socks.

Porterhouse.

I keep thinking I want a quality watch, but then I look around me at the clock on my monitor, phone, desk and wall and realize I really don't want another reminder that I'm running late. Besides, that's a bit high end for a Father's Day gift.

I'm kicking around the idea of a Kindle - but that's also probably beyond the reasonable budget.

An iTunes gift card in any amount is always appreciated.

A growler of IPA from either of two local craft brewery's in our area.

Cliche as it sounds, I want my family around me all day on Father's Day. We're all so busy right now that if we get one meal a week around the table together, that's just by dumb luck. My wife was gracious enough to let my son attend a classmate's birthday party on Mother's Day. I'm not sure I would have been. I don't need my family to fawn over me, but I do want them around all day.

A diaper free day! This is a standing tradition in our home, and if you have children in this age bracket I highly recommend instituting this as a house rule. Our philosophy is no parent should have to wipe anyone else's diaper region on their own parent day or their own birthday!

A few bags of Marley Coffee (so awesome if you're a coffee nut.) Its funny Tim Hortons was mentioned. It's the only coffee I've encountered that I can't drink black due to the taste.

Also eyeing the Dlink Boxee but the content for Canada is pretty poor.

I'd like to try the Nike Sportwatch in person before buying. I haven't had much luck with the iphone app so I'm a bit apprehensive.

Since the birth of my 4 yr. old twins exercising has been on the back burner.

Having gained about 10 lbs. and gradually losing my single guy physique when my wife asked me last year what I wanted for Father's Day I jokingly said a gym membership.

Instead she got me a TorsoTee which is a t-shirt with an image of a male chest and abs on the front.

It's a big hit with me and actually wear it often. The wife gets a kick from it too especially when I put it on after we get home from a date night without the kids!

I wouldn't mind either getting a Roku Box or a day of fishing by myself!

Hi Dougj,

That's interesting that you're not into Tim's Coffee. I grew up in the States, not far from the border, so trips to Canada were a regular part of my youth - maybe the fact that Tim Horton's was in "another country" added a bit of exotic appeal to it. But I do love that coffee!

As for a Father's day gift... I've now put some serious thought into it... I'm going to ask for either a weedwacker or a shop vac. I know those are very cliche "dad gifts", but we've only been in our home for a year. I do not have many of the things that you guys who are longtime homeowners take for granted. My wife has been making a lot of remarks about the edging around the garden, so I may end up with the weedwacker. I'm shooting for the Craftsman C3 model, I've got a cordless reciprocal saw that uses the same battery type.

Cheers

Roger

So I've been following the thread and thinking about this some more...I want a hat. A stylish, quality chapeau.

I'm thinking of something along the lines of a Fedora www.villagehatshop.com/fedoras.html

I'm not even sure why I think it's a good idea. I just like the idea of having a quality hat.

I'd like to close on a new house...

Aside from that, I actually asked for a new Tivo Remote. Our "new one" from our 1 year old HD has only a couple buttons with screenprint remaining. The two from units we bought years ago (5+ years) show no signs of wear.

If all that wasn't in place, I'd be asking for something to move a step forward in a hobby. It would be something beer related or maybe something to finally motivate me to carve the pipe kit I bought three and a half years ago. As it is, I'll get a c-note or more from my parents and that'll likely go toward something along those lines... eventually.

Dad's Favorite Pastime Gift Basket

Gift Baskets is a really cool website and has a variety of such gift baskets perfect for your boyfriend's mother and they're also very reasonably priced.

I hope this information was helpful. Always happy to help :)

I like the hat idea, but can someone else pick out a hat for you? Seems like something you need to do yourself.

I used to have a great hipster-doofus hat. Surprisingly, Target is a good source for them, I've found. They're inexpensive and not particularly high quality, but good for a summer lid.

My iPod has been acting fritzy lately. A new one of those might be nice. I was recetly accused of buying too many gadgets for myself (completely unfounded) so I might have to hint around and hope for one as a Father's Day gift.

@smithsy -- some of those baskets look very cool! Looking forward to exploring that site some more.

@Daddy Clay -- yeah, the hat is definitely a pretty individualized purchase. If I really thought it was viable, I'd go shopping with the wife and pick out a few that I like and then let her surprise me.

Here's a gadgety thing that would be a great Father's Day gift to both of you.

The Lark is an interesting alarm system that works with your mobile device. The phone is connected via blutooth to a wristband that vibrate to awaken you. The sensor also measures your movements in the night and provides analysis of the quality of your sleep.

We've had some major tension in my bedroom over my early morning running schedule. My alarm goes off at 5:15 some mornings. I am so interested in this solution that I went ahead and bought a unit to try it out. I'll offer a review soon.

This is my first Father's Day as a father, but I've always associated the day with the beginning of Summer, so when I think of what I would want, I think of outdoor stuff. Gardening, boating, high-tech car-washing, hiking, grilling, beer drinking - all of these summer activities have plenty of gifting opportunities.

I'm getting my old man some weekend loafers. He's never really tried mens moccassins, since he used to think that was purely for people living up in the mountains. But they're comfortable and he won't admit it until probably next year.

got them from ewinstonusa

Another good idea. Tickets to the big game. We know in a tough economy, and with rising ticket prices that these kinds of adventures strain the wallet.

Check out ScoreBig where you can find event tickets at a discount. Very cool site, very cool service.

It's 2010 Gas Gas EC 450 competition enduro, yet street legal for the forest service roads we have throughout Washington and for the tiny bits of tarmac I may need to do between trailheads.

I've been drooling over this bike for a yr now. It's the current version of my 2005, but with a better fuel injection computer, better suspension, a more woods oriented geometry for better handling in the tight stuff.

Although it's a top competitor in Europe and Australia, it's a rare bike in the U.S., 1 of only 6 or 10 imported (I can't remember exactly).

Thru friends, I located it sitting in a warehouse still crated.
Saved $4,000 off the retail price, had to assemble it myself (no big deal).

It's almost too sexy to get muddy.
