Are You In or Are You Out

Sure the looming Presidential Election provides great fodder for SNL skits but the most important Decision of 2008 lurks in late November and persists into the new year. Where in the world do you spend the Holidays? If you are like me and have out-laws and in-laws spread all over the US of A, the decision can be quite difficult.

Share your tips on how to plan your holiday visits!

Our more extended families have the family Christmas before Christmas or a while afterwards. At the moment we take turns going to our parents houses on the holidays. However where we live we are less than an hour either way from our parents house. I'm sure our plans are much less complicated than other people's holidays with our family's being so close. We are actually hoping that next year we will be able to do some holidays at our house instead of traveling. I think though that is probably very wishful thinking on our part.

We do Thanksgiving at my parents, and then Christmas at hers. I have a full week off(or more) at Christmas so the 5 hour drive to her parents is MUCH easier when we can spend a couple of days there. My parents and immediate family are in town or within a 45 minute drive... so depending on when everyone has Christmas, we try to make both my Dad's and my brothers gatherings (my parents are divorced)...

I won't be making too many promises now that we have a kid. It's a nice excuse to say Hey, I'm not dragging him all over. But as long as he continues to travel well, we'll make the effort. IF ONLY we had a house big enough to host, but then, that has a whole different set of issues with prep and clean up, as well as dinner... don't know if I'm ready for that yet.

Right now, the holiday schedule is easy. Duncan's only going to be 7 months old at Thanksgiving so he's a great excuse to stay home. I've also not been in contact with my family in over five years so that hasn't been competition. But things change next year. We have a friend who sings with the Glen Rock Carolers in SE Pennsylvania. We promised ourselves to make following the carolers a tradition as often as we can. It's a long night, but makes a special holiday. We also joined a church which has a festival that starts the day after Christmas that we will probably get involved in. Then my wife has re-established contact with my parents and eventually I'll feel up to joining whatever becomes of that. With my wife's family three hours in one direction and my family three hours in another direction, things will get tight.

I've been big on starting my own traditions. I hope that that can remain a part of whatever we develop.

I completely agree about creating your own traditions, and *eventually* getting the grandparents to fold into that new tradition. It may take a while for Mi-mi to give up making the Christmas dinner, but eventually it should be about putting the kids at the center of that holiday. My in-laws usually make it down from the NE for a visit, because heading up there during that time of year proved to almost always results in catastrophic illness for my kids. The year, I think we'll do T-giving at our house then head to the HORNS GAME! WOOT!

X-mas eve we have dinner with extended family at our house. Santa visits in the morn, then we head for another round at my folks place -- less than an hour drive away.

I love the holidays. Really look forward to heading into that time of year. Best time to be a dad.

Dang, the title made me think of In-N-Out ..... Well, I know whats for dinner tonight.
I hope to spend the holidaze as I always HOPE to... curled up in the fetal position hiding from everyone, eating pizza rolls and watching football - or the food network.
But, alas, I will end up hosting the festivities or schleping the family the 50 miles to the 'extended' family's house to smile and wave, and continually check the time on my laptop as I avoid eye contact with everyone.
The usual.

Here's the part I don't understand about the Holiday shuffle:

For YEARS, my wife and I dragged our single, engaged or otherwise childless asses home for every frickin' holiday. We suffered through years of East Coast I-95 traffic jams. We thought, fer sure, that once we had a kid the parents would have a little sympathy and come see US. We, after all, now posess the main attraction (i.e. our daughter). We figured fer sure we could put our feet down and demand that the parents start dragging their raggedy asses down to see US. So that WE could stay home for the holidays, FINALLY.

Doesn't seem to be working out that way! Why!?!?!?

Tell the old farts that your precious daughter deserves to have the Holiday Festivities in her own home and they are welcome to join you if they would like!

What he said. And as soon as I have a house big enough to hold more than 4 guests comfortably, that's what we're doing. Probably have 2 kids by then... so I'm sure I'll be much more tired of carting around babies and babychit.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
