TOPIC: the dangers of the coffee table

the dangers of the coffee table

this article in the new york times brought back fond memories of our son's early attempts at ambulation: www.nytimes.com/2010/12/30/garden/30tables.html?pagewanted=all

seemed worth sharing.

We replaced our coffee table with a leather ottoman type with storage build in. It has soft cushion all around and no place to crawl under. But I wonder if the little one will not be able to quench his curiosity of whats under there when she is here.

There was some chatter on Twitter taking the Times to task for fear mongering on this one, but I get it. I think every parent has had a kid that got a bad bonk on the coffee table -- I'm just not sure that there is any way to prevent kids that are learning how to walk from hurting themselves.

I would of assumed that the militant behavior of furniture towards children was common knowledge. I'm still sporting a visible scar from a coffee table that ran across a room and head butted me when i was kid.

It's not just coffee tables either, Furniture in general just likes to punish kids. I once spent half day folded up inside a metal framed sofa bed that tried to eat me. well... maby i folded myself into it then realized it was really hard to get back out.

btw, Asking your little brother to turn on the clothes dryer while your in it, well its just not as much fun as you might think it would be.

This is something my wife and I really refused to get exercised about.
No bumpers on the coffee table or Fireplace.

They walk, they fall, they cry, they get up.

Our #2 took a header into the coffee table at my MIL's. Got a nice shiner for the pictures.

They climb onto the arm of the chair I'm sitting in and launch themselves onto me.
Gives my wife a heart attack, or it used to.

Making everything 'safe' for them seems like a really bad way to raise children.

Yes, certain precautions are good, like car seats and outlet covers but the world is not a safe place and I'd rather teach them that than try and protect them all the time.

We put ours in the basement for now. Not necessarily for safety. I think we took it out mostly because his toys were taking up too much space. Our living room isn't very big and for some reason it has become his playroom.

I don't think we've gone overboard but we have baby proofed the house. The basics really, outlet covers, the TV cabinet and dressers are anchored, tot locks on the cabinets, and a baby gate for the stairs. Well the gate is really a super yard that we've rigged with bungee cords. Thats all. Padding does seem a little over protective.

We have a foam bumper around our coffee table. Abby likes to chew on it when she is teething. She wants nothing to do with teething biscuits or teethers, the foam rubber is the way to go for those sore gums!I have had to redo 3 corners with stronger tape because she keeps "biting" them off.

It seems to depend on the coffee table. The one my wife has is very angular. My family coffee table, stored in the basement, has lots of curves on the edges and corners. I'm sure it would still be in use if any of my furniture would have entered my wife's living room.

But kids make us rethink what furniture we need. Who'd have thought that two cheap, kid sized rocking chairs would be part of our Ethan Allen living room?

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
