What to do with no longer used toys?

What are you doing with all the no longer used toys around the house? Throwing them out, donating, etc? Just curious, as we have tons of these.

I can't get myself to toss or donate anything just yet, as we're "not done yet" with procreating. So now we have clothes and toys that range from newborn to 4 years(boy)... Space is getting extremely tight in our small house.

BUT I know that we will eventually ask around if any of our friends with kids want the toys, especially the ones that were gifted or handed down to us. If we have a particularly specialized one that we purchased new (like a complete Thomas the Tank Engine playset), we will probably sell it on Craigslist or eBay, just to bring a small amount to offset NEW toys and such. I'm also sure I'll purge a bit more than others did with us. Before passing on or donating anything, I'll toss worn out clothes and broken toys. (After cannibalizing any electronics I think I can use out of them.)

Oh, and welcome to the forums, Sam!

There is a web site that you can advertise the product until you remove it or sell it and it's free to advertise and no commission to pay once you have sold the item. The site is called preloved.co.uk Not sure if there is an alternative version for the states. We also have sites that you can advertise for free and you give it away. This is normaly aimed at charities, preschools and families in difficult situations. Hope this helps.

We normally donate our no longer used toys. Where we donate them completely depends on what they are and what condition they're in.

If the toy is in really good shape and someone can get some money out of it for a good cause, we will normally donate it to Goodwill or the Salvation Army.

If it's not necessarily worth money, but it's still safe and kids would like to play with it, we'll normally give it to a day care of pre-school that is in need. It's worth noting that we do try to sanitize everything as well as possible before giving it away.

The one thing we never get rid of are stuffed animals. You never know what sentimental attachment might be associated with each one. In addition, I wouldn't feel comfortable giving them away because they are so difficult to sanitize, and I don't want to enflict other kids with our germs. Therefore, we always keep those.

I hope that helps.

Cheers,
Military Dad

My wife and I are absolutely crazy about purging the house. Our place is way too small with 5 people living here to store unused stuff. Several times a year, we wade through the house, trash bags in hand, swooping up anything that has gone untouched for 12 months or more.

I sometimes feel a little sorry for the kids in this process. But that doesn't really slow us down.

We have SURVIVED on hand-me-downs -- both between kids and from friends. But that's a subject for a different thread.

When it comes to toys, we almost always go with Goodwill. If there is a set, or something that has had great play value, we offer it first to friends, then to the custodial staff at the school where we live. Anything that is left goes to Goodwill.

I'm not much of an Ebay or Craigslist guy. Mostly out of laziness.

I'm liking Freecycle. Setting stuff out at the curb on a non-trash day and letting the taker come get it has worked well for us. In our area, there are a few people who are on the look out for stuff that victims of fire are in need of and kids' toys and accessories are near the top of their list.

Nik. Let me know if you're relieving yourself of the Thomas stuff. Our boys are totally into trains and I don't see that changing for a long time. We're getting a pretty elaborate train table for them for Christmas.

Our patterns are much like Daddy Clay's, although we're not as aggressive. Annual purge at our home.

Right about this time of year too. Our priority list generally goes family, friends, local rescue missions, goodwill.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
