Waiting for kids? The poop on being older parents
3 Years, 9 Months ago
I didn't see an earlier discussion on the topic of older parents, so I thought I'd start one.

Since we're older.

Nationally, the U.S. Census report shows that more American women are skipping motherhood or are waiting longer to have children, a trend already evident in California, where birthrates to women in their 40s have tripled the past two decades.

My wife is 37 and I'm 42 and we're having our first child. A trend that's growing, but what are the pros and cons?

I found a listing of some here.

I've got mine but would like to hear from the boys in my daddy hood.

When the girls were born I was 29, but my hubby was 39. We're both first time parents. His family had pretty much given up hope on him ever having offspring, so they are over the moon thrilled (x2). So I think the joy of his family is certainly a benifit.

I also think that we were both able to have more life experience (both as single and then married people) before we had kids. And hopefully those experiences make us better, more informed parents.

We were also married for 5 years before the kids came along, so I think that allowed us to become a stronger couple than we would have been if we had decided to have kids right away.

Not to mention emotional maturity!

I think there are a lot of pro's to being a more mature parent!

The only con I see is that you have more energy when you're younger, and depending on your health may live longer to be able to enjoy your grandchildren.

My wife & I just adopted our first child (a 2 year old) and we're both in our mid-40s. We didn't plan it this way, but we feel that having waited so long to become parents gave us the chance to do many things solo that would've been much harder with kids (like lots of traveling), and afforded us the opportunity to become more stable in our careers & finances than most younger parents are likely to be. Being a little older and having been married without children for 12 years also has lent a whole new set of perspectives to parenting & life priorities.

However, since 3 of our parents are already gone and my MIL is deteriorating rapidly, he won't get to grow up knowing grandparents, which really bums me out since I remember how great it was to be close to my maternal granddad as a teen.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
