TOPIC: Turned in My Man Card

Turned in My Man Card
1 Year, 11 Months ago
Well guys, I turned in my Man Card (thanks Clay and Brad) on Friday. My best friend had his nuts cut off vasectomy two weeks before mine, and I am amazed by the differences in our experiences.

I was not nervous, this sort of thing has been on my radar since our daughter was born almost three years ago. We had such struggles getting pregnant in the first place because of issues with my wife's body that there is no way that we can afford the process of making a child again, much less for diapering and schooling.

So anyway - I had my procedure done on Friday afternoon with the intent to crash at the house for the weekend and watch as much crappy TV and Olympics as possible. I cleared my calendar of my Sunday meetings and tried to find things for the girls to do out of the house for a few days. As it turned out, by Saturday I was up and about, cleaning house for company on Sunday!

I won't go into details, check out the video that the DadLabs guys have done - information is correct and you can ignore the two guys with the scissors! Aside from a weekend at home and one large bag of corn down the pants drain, I've had no pain and am looking forward to "the follow up" with the wife when the stitches are ready for it.

Rob,

Thanks for this post. I have to say that despite my resolute decision to have this done, I am a little nervous.

I guess I had not thought about the stitches thing. Hmmmm.
You said your friend had a different experience? Pain, time?

Here is the link to the dadlabs video about vasectomies.

My friend's was done the day before we got 60 inches of snow in four days. He did more than he should have and pulled a stitch. Nothing more than that - just more than he expected. (I told him he should have let his wife use the snow blower and shovel, which she is capable of doing, but he did not.)

The funny things were not about the stitches, though. He went to a different urologist. He got a (unexpected!) prostate exam during the office visit. I did not. We was given the option for self-grooming prior to the procedure. I was not. He was given antibiotics and I was not. We're the exact same age, but different docs do things differently. (Which I have found with my nephrologists over the years already.)

Honestly, for me the hardest thing was fasting before my afternoon appointment. They put me completely under and once I woke up, I was ready to go. We even picked up fast-food on the way home. (Damn I was hungry!)

Crazy. My thoughts exactly.

The condom industry isn't collapsing. The variety is vast. And they are sold EVERYWHERE. (Was married 6 years the first time, and no kids... it's no problemo for me.)

Keep your scalpel well away from my boys.

My wife wondered why I started laughing when she brought "up" the V topic last night. I've decided it will be instead of getting a tattoo at 40. The tat would be a more likely candidate if they'd put me under for the procedure and recovery.

I'm still not sure why she brought it up. Oh, the question about whether a V is covered by insurance. Her IUD was with only a co-pay due but birth control pills weren't covered at all by the drug coverage.

So, Rob... How did insurance cover it? I'm sure it will vary, but it's good to know how the trend runs.

I agree with Daddy Clay and concretin_nik. You guys are nuts.. or you've lost your marbles OHHHH!
Paging Dr Dick Chopp.
Couldn't resist.

Really though good for you. I have to say that if I could spare my wife major surgery I would too.

@Ben - it is covered by insurance, though I have not received a bill just yet. Will update you all when it arrives because, lets face it, that makes a difference. I happen to have great insurance with an employer that will reimburse co-pays to a certain amount.

I'm on day four - still absolutely no pain. Hell, I even did some painting this morning. (bedroom has to be brought up to snuff for the impending sale.)

When I read this, I thought that maybe you were experiencing a side effect by painting landscapes or still-life. Black Velvet Paint-By-Number, i think I could deal with!

Sorry - we are in the process of selling our house, I have a professional painter coming in to do 75% of the work, but to save cashola I'm doing a couple of rooms. Thought the timing would be horrible, what with my recent snip-snip, but I'm back to my regular self so I have hardly slowed down. I did take it really easy Saturday and Sunday, and mostly slow yesterday, though.

Paging Dr Dick Chopp.

That was the name of the doc who did my dad's V. No joking.

Tim and I haven't even began to talk about this subject, he's only 25 and I'm only 22 so there is plenty of time left for Tim and his boys. I bet he would say that he wouldn't want me to go through the female version. I already had an ovary and fallopian tube removed due to a possibly cancerous cyst. It turned out fine, but I've had all the surgery I ever plan to down there. (funny thing is, I got pregnant about three months after the surgery. Having one ovary didn't slow us down.)

Dick Chop is an Austin legend. The name has got to rank up there with the pediatric office that I went to as a child (Dr. Hurt and Dr. Payne), and my teen years dermatologist (Dr. Cheek).

My grandmother's proctologist is Dr. Butts. Also not joking.

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
