TOPIC: Tonsilectomy recovery

Tonsilectomy recovery
2 Years, 1 Month ago
Tomorrow early in the morning we take one of our 3 year olds in for a tonsilectomy. Any tips for helping them recover andwhat to expect for a recovery timeline?

We are stocked up on ice cream, sherbet, and broth. I signed up for a free 30 days of Netflix so that we have enough entertainment for him and are sending his twin brother away for a couple days to make things easier. My wife has been to the mom boards and they seem to be fear mongering about the recovery time. What is the dad take on this?

My kids have not had the tonsilectomy procedure but 2 cousins and one best friend have had the procedure in the past year. Granted the first several days were pretty rough as far as swallowing and talking go but day 4 seemed to bring big improvement. On the positive side, each child benefited very much in the form of huge growth spurts and an explosion of verbal ability. Good luck to you and yours.

I had a tonsillectomy performed on me as an adult in 2009. The recovery time for this procedure is much worse for adults than it is for kids.

After about 5 or 6 days I was feeling OK. It took me a total of about 10 days to get back to normal. So whatever happens with your son, you can bet it will be much easier than that.

Brad and Roger. Thanks for the input. He seems to be recovering well. The Dr. kept saying just how enormous his tonsils were and that it will do my son well having them out. Weird thing is though, his voice is higher now. I don't know if it is because of the discomfort of the post surgery sores or if the loss of huge adenoids adn tonsils have created the difference.

The key to recovery so far is keeping him away from his twin brother. Once their eyes meet it is all out smackdown and wrestling. That and a steady stream of Mighty Machines on Netflix!
