Toddler Leashes...thoughts...?
2 Years, 2 Months ago
This is coming from a father of 16mthn old boy/girl twins. I like the idea (I think) for busy places like zoos etc...but am curious to where other dad's sit with the idea.

Thoughts?

My son is only about 5 months old now. Still not really running off by himself... I've seen the leashed children before and laughed though. I've also seen some kids I wished were leashed. Now that it's my problem I'd probably skip it at the grocery store but I like the idea at the zoo or crowded places too. Joan Lunden has a less conspicuous "leash" system. www.kinderkord.com I'd definitely consider that. Do a search for that in the video section. I think they did an interview with her awhile back.

I'm not a fan. I guess that if I want my chickens to run free, I want at least that much for my kids. Not that the idea hasn't had it's appeal.

We've noticed, when we're out and about, kids who cling to their parents like Velcro to an afgan. We haven't been graced with a docile toddler. He runs riot nearly everywhere. It's not easy keeping up. We've cut back on social times when only one of us adults have to keep watch over both little guys. It's exhausting, that's for sure. I just don't see us doing it another way.

Down the road, our stroller has handles explicitly for a young child to hold as they walk along. I admit some curiosity as to their effectiveness. But I think that for us it's going to come down to teaching him to stay with us, pay attention and ask to change course. That's a lot for a 2 year old.

I think you have to consider the total number of kids in tow. If a family only has one child in tow, then I would have to say "no" with a condescending tone. If a parent is wrestling 5 kids, a leash is far more justified.

My take would be: if you have multiple kids and are headed into one of those crazy and potentially dangerous situations like: airport, cruise ship, train station, amusement park, street festival, music concert or rave, that a subtle Kinderkord does not seem out of order. I think I'm not that comfortable with it in everyday situations when it seems like a parent is restraining a child that cannot be contained enough otherwise. Seems like there has to be a better way in that situation.

i like this answer. we only have one son, who just turned two, and as soon as he was able to walk outside more than a few steps, he was taught to hold our hand when we went for walks in the neighborhood. now, no matter where we are, i only need to say "take my hand" and he reaches for my hand. though he can sometimes fight it a little bit, we always stand firm and he comes around. i think he still thinks of it as performing a trick or something, and mostly enjoys doing it. like all things in toddler relations, it takes some practice, but it's totally worth it. the only downside is that sometimes he uses hand holding against us to lead us to the pantry or to get the latest annoying toys from his grandparents.

for what it's worth, i can't imagine doing this with multiple children. though we have gotten ours to hold hands with other kids which would seem to allow for daisy chaining, i wouldn't really trust them to look out for each other.

Has anyone used this? what are the kids' reaction?

I hate the idea but do see the need for it in an amusement park scenario.

I hate it alot less than the thought of being separated from my kids for a few minutes or even worse.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
