TOPIC: The Year in Fatherhood

The Year in Fatherhood
3 Years, 12 Months ago
With Father's Day approaching, it's time to look back to see how the institution of fatherhood has fared in the last 365. What are your nominees for the most significant moment in fatherhood in the last year? My nominee: unlimited $300 tax rebates per kid! I have three! Fertility finally pays off!

(Too bad, the statute has run on Baldwin and Hasselhoff.)

What are your nominees?

Disclosure: I am writing a column on this topic for the Austin American Statesman and have very leaky ethics about borrowing the ideas of others.

I would say DadLabs getting recognition by ForYourImagination and other large sponsors, like Boon and One Step Ahead, is great for the institution of fatherhood.

Or maybe I'm hoping that you get advertising love for those being mentioned. :o)

How about David Archiletta's dad getting booted from backstage at American Idol. A stage dad. I guess that's progress. Sort of.

Flomax commercials -- definitely a highlight for fatherhood. Dad, what does 'decrease in semen' mean?

I gotta give props to you guys. This site has come a LONG way from when I first found you back in October (I think). You cleaned everything up, these forums are starting to take off a bit, your vids are more professional (production value anyway *wink*), you've got great sponsors and a real web presence.

Of course my most significant moment was the whole magic trick of Indy's birth. Pay no attention to what's going on behind the curtain. Ok, peek over, and TA-DA! There's a kid laying there on Mom's stomach! We're all pretty sure where he came from, but seriously, he totally could have come from a trap door in the floor.

I'll think about it a bit, and if I think of something less kiss-ass, and less personal, I'll post up... But you guys do a great job and make sharing fatherhood more fun.

Okay, fellas, my deadline on this year in fatherhood piece is coming up, and I need you to write it for me inspire me. How about media, any commercials or shows that you think flatter dads?

Sorry man. I got nothin' really. I liked the commercial where dad bought a run down house in the desert as a vacation home. And in the back is an empty pool where they pad up and go skate. (Toyota?) But how about going at it from a different angle? We're Dads. No need for hype. No need for the big parade or news story celebrating Dadhood. Just the occasional nod or grunt of approval when we grill a good meal, change the oil, take out the trash, mow the lawn, fix the bike, coach the groms in (insert sport here)... We will strive to be nurturing dudes and raise cancer curing doctors, (better)presidents, superbowl winning footballers, (and well educated professional skateboarders) with merely a few beers and maybe some completely unnecessary but super technological gadgets tossed our way on a weekend in June... But we won't be heartbroken with just a new tie. Because we're Dads.

Hi there, I know this might sound like it's from out in left field, but i vote for the following T-Mobile Ad.

I work in advertising and marketing, and I am so sick of seeing the bumbling man-child figure that dominates TV and advertising. I thought it was great to see a serious no nonsense dad that didn't have to have his chin wiped by his super-woman wipe.

Also:
I think this story is a sad but telling of a fathers dedication

Man wrestles Crazed Deer to the ground to protect son

Increased Awarness for stay at home dads

And that's about the best I can find from recent stuff. There still doesn't seem to be a lot of good dad news or advice out there, but hey that's why i joined this site

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
