Share your stories of taking the kids to the dentist. How do you convince them that the dentist is not a scary place? When did you start and how often do you go with your kids? Are you setting a good example? Do you have a dental plan for your kids? And dare we even talk about orthodontics?

Today my wife is taking my daughter to have a tooth pulled. She had a cavity that developed an abscess and this is provoking intense parenting guilt. The dentist did her best to explain that the baby tooth was formed in a funny way that led to the abscess, but it isn't preventing me from feeling like I should call CPS on myself. We should have found a way to get her to brush more often, and once we discovered the cavity, we should have had her in for a return visit for a filling much more quickly. Add to this equation that we delayed getting the tooth treated while we went on a kid-free vacation and you have a perfect parenting guilt storm.

When you kids get cavities do you take it as a personal judgment of your parenting ability?

We began taking our son to his pediatric dentist when his first tooth completely came in. He then went back for another visit after he turned a year old. He will see his dentist again next year, and then once he turns 3, he will begin regular checkups which occur twice a year.

Our son is a happy-go-lucky guy anyway. He is a people person and is always smiling and "talking." We didn't have any trouble with him at his first visit nor his second. We're hoping the pattern continues.

Our son is on the same dental plan as myself and my wife. We will add our daughter when the time comes.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
