Talking About Haiti/Giving to Haiti
2 Years, 4 Months ago
How are you managing the conversation that you are having with your kids about the tragedy in Haiti? What kinds of questions are these events bringing up around your dinner table? Are you taking action as an individual or as a family? Where are you directing your help and resources?

They had some questions about what makes earthquakes, but not much else. I don't think they begin to understand the human toll there (who can?). Obviously, I've done the text gift to the Red Cross (my son sent one from his phone as well), and I also am a believer in an organization called Partners in Health, which is probably the biggest healthcare provider left in operation. I made a donation there.

I'm thankful my little man is only 1 month old. I can't begin to fathom how to explain this kind of tragedy to someone that could understand but not understand at the same time. My soul hurts just thinking about it.

I did the 90999 thing myself, as well. I also donated to Catholic Relief Services as they have 0% overhead and were already on the ground before the quake.

I found this article to be particularly interesting

blogs.redcross.org.uk/emergencies/2010/0...lp-not-hinder-haiti/

Planning such a large-scale relief project has got to be a challenge.

My son is 6. While we haven't exposed him to the news, images etc, we have talked about the the situation in very general terms with him. We talked about the fact that the earthquake occurred and that there were lots of kids who lost their homes and everything that they had.

We were able to make it concrete and constructive for him in that his birthday was this past weekend and he agreed that while Mom and Dad and grandparents would give him gifts, his friends and classmates should take money that they would have spent on gifts and donate it to Haiti relief at the charity of their choice.

He was really excited about that to be able to try and find a way to help.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
