TOPIC: Plastic surgery for kids?

Plastic surgery for kids?
1 Year, 3 Months ago
The title is a little off-putting I know, but I figured I'd get right to the point.

My 3 1/2 year old daughter recently rolled off of our bed and bit through her bottom lip, requiring 16 stitches. There is now a massive raised scar there as wide as her bite. I'm wondering if I should consult a plastic surgeon on this or wait a few years, (though by then, the scar tissue will be pretty much set). I don't want this to be an issue for her when she's older, so I'm wondering if I should do anything about it now?

I've had this discussion with my husband, and if she were a boy, I wouldn't think anything of it. (Chicks dig scars and all, right?) It's not like I'm considering breast implants for her, just a minor cosmetic scar removal.

Is there a problem with wanting her to not have any other issues to be teased about, as kids can be so cruel and will find other issues to tease her about as it is.

my wife, who has done a lot of sutures in her life, says that if the injury crosses the border of the lip and chin, then yes. but she also said it will probably be 6 months before a plastic surgeon will do anything.

It seems more like reconstructive rather than plastic surgery because you're fixing a scar post-accident. I'd say do it before there's to much scar tissue. I'd probably still do it if she was a boy. I think years from now she'll be glad she has the surgery but I'm not sure how a 3 1/2 to 4 year old would take it. Good luck either way.

As for when, ask the surgeon. They may be ok waiting, they may want to do it right away. Not sure exactly what the procedure is gonna be.

As for whether or not to do it? You're the parent, doesn't matter what others think. As you said, it's not a boob job for a 3 year old (or even a 16 year old).

I'd probably do it, even for theBoy, particularly at an age where they're not going to remember it really. (the cause or the procedure) An 8 or 9 year old? Nah. To paraphrase BonJovi, who you are is written in the scars.

And yes, Chicks dig scars.

Certainly worth gathering all the data from the docs before making a decision. I would go ahead and get consults.

As far as the sexism issue is concerned, life is different for boys and girls. We've raised our 9 yr old to be a tough, self-sonfident, jocky girl. But the issues of appearance, the social pressure on her are of and entirely different order than what my sons experience. Sometimes parents have to deal with reality, regardless of how we wish the world worked.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
