If you live in a multi income family, how do you and mom decide who stays home with the sick kids? Do you rotate, the one with the lowest income, most flexible boss, arm wrestle?

I'm usually it. Straight up because I have a flexible work flow and boss. I could even theoretically take the sick kid with me and he could crash out in my office, if necessary. But it hasn't come to that, yet. She has stayed home a couple of times with him, but she was also feeling kind of bad those days.

And he's so young still, when he is sick, he sleeps, so stayin' home is usually productive for me. But again, I tempt fate by sayin' we have been truly blessed. He hasn't been sick much, and when he has, it's been over a weekend or break (ok, that is a bit irritating)... *knocks on wood*

Tough one, Brad. I can't imagine why this on your mind now, as you change your son's diaper on your desk here at DLWHQ.

I think this is got to be one of the most often cited sources of conflict for two-career families. Things run pretty smoothly in our house until somebody gets sick. Then all hell breaks loose.

We generally take it on a case by case basis. Factors include: who has a huge meeting/deadline, who took them last time, who seems the most stressed out.

My wife generally does more than her share, by choice. I try to keep this in mind. I also try to keep in mind that her job pays more than mine.

When we're both under work pressure at the same time and a kid spikes a doozy, it is almost inevitable that sparks will fly.

To be perfectly honest, I sort of wish my wife would let me handle it more often.

I look forward to hearing how other respond to this thread.

It hasn't been too much of a conflict in our house (yet!). When there's a sick day, we have been lucky enough to split it. My wife stays with the baby in the morning, and I come home at lunch and let her work in the afternoon. Thankfully my work schedule is flexible that way.

There will come a time when we both have meetings/important events that can't flex. I'll probably end up letting my priorities go, as we rely more on her income, and I'd rather spend the day at home with the little guy anyway.

I usually pull sick duty because I have a more flexible schedule, and can get work done remotely if necessary. I get more flack at work for taking a sick day for myself than taking one for Abby.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
