Nicknames
1 Year, 10 Months ago
My son's name is Daniel, but I don't think I have ever once called him that.

His many nicknames range from the common and obvious "Danny", to the more playful, "Danny-Banany".

Lately I have been calling him either "Captain Stinky Pants", or "No-Teeth McGee".

What nicknames do you have for your kids?

My son can't talk yet, so I don't know how he feels about the matter, but for those of you with older kids, do they like their nicknames? Are they embarrassed by them?

Have any of their nicknames stuck with them as they have gotten older?

I call my 6yr old Whirlwind. Have for a couple of years now. I presume he's ok with it. He's generally pretty outspoken about his preferences.

It's fun because that's a nickname that only I use. His grandparents don't use it. Even his mother doesn't use it, so it's just between him and I.

My only regret in using it is that I've published it online. I wish I'd kept it off the 'net. I've talked to him about the idea that if he meets a stranger, even if that person tries to tell him, "it's ok. I know your dad calls you Whirlwind, that doesn't mean that he or even I know that person."

My wife and I have talked about it and we've explained it to our family that I'm the only person that calls the boy Whirlwind. So don't take it personally, if he corrects them if they try to use it.

My 18 mos old daughter goes by Tiny K or Lil 'Bit, that we share with friends and family.

This week everyone in the house is a Shrek character. My daughter said she preferred Princess Fiona over Rebel Fiona. Argh.

when our son was younger and was being a punk, we'd call him dr. crankenstein or fussleupagus. now his most common nickname is "home slice", after a pizza place i don't even like that much...

there was a really interesting article in the new yorker a couple years back on the lifecycles of nicknames:

My son's name is Cecil, but I usually call him Stinkopotamus. He earns the nickname every other day.

It varies from buddy to stink, to pooper to drooler. Early on I hardly ever called my son by his name and have now since made an effort use his real name. I think a nickname can be fun as they get older though.

My oldest supplied himself with his first nickname. If you asked him as a toddler what his name was he would say "Wee-wee."

I really hoped that one would not stick.

His sister gave him his second -- "Bubba." I think it's hilarious because it suits him so poorly. He doesn't seem to mind it and it's pretty widely used in the extended family. I also hope that one doesn't catch on outside the family.

I have a private nickname for my daughter that nobody else uses, which I kind of like.

My youngest has such a nickname prone name that he's been Coop since day one.

Nicknames fly fast and furious around our house.

I have two boys and they are boys in every sense of the word. I mean they are TRO-UBLE.

Chaos is 3 and Mayhem is 1 now and just took his first steps a few days ago.

Though no one else calls them by those nick names I like it that way.

Our boys have many nicknames, but when they were infants we had to identify their bottles so we could keep track of how much each ate (drank). Their names are similar (Carson and Caden) so I shortened it to the first unique letter in each of their names. Therefore we have R&D (a common shorthand for Research and Development)which is very fitting for our first kids, especially since they are twins.

Now that they are older, I name my Fantasy Football teams after them, "Cademan and the Bobber" (Carson would bob his head while he was learning to walk, and sometimes now when he is excited or really happy he still does it. The Bobber is also Shiner, for his propensity to smack into things.

Growing up I was Scooter (still am to family and close friends) and once I hit college I became Cookie. Growing up with nicknames like that, my boys are destined to be referred to by nicknames from my side of the family.

My girl Abby has a few

Abby Giggles when she is very happy and playful.
Abby Boom Boom when she poops a lot.
Crabby Abby when she is nothing but a royal pain.

There are a few others... but you get the gist.

Dan

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
