TOPIC: Mommy Bloggers v New York Times

Mommy Bloggers v New York Times
1 Year, 11 Months ago
A lot of mommy bloggers are pretty up in arms about this recent piece on the front of the New York Times Sunday Style section. In general, they feel the piece belittles them, and makes them out to be shallow and ambitious at the expense of their parenting. What are your thoughts about this tempest in a tea pot? Do you have any general thoughts about Mommy Bloggers? Do you have some that you read regularly? Are dad blogs really any different? And where does all this put DadLabs?

I didn't get a negative vibe from the article at all (well, the title is bit judgmental, but that was really it for me).

There absolutely are bloggers (of all sorts) out there who are shallow ambitious turds, and I guarantee some of them are Mommy Bloggers. Irritating people who just wanna be seen and heard. Womanly spite and motherly resentment is what drives their blog. I can't give you an example, because if I even suspect that in the slightest, I quit reading that blog, with an unheard "Jackass" as I click away ne'er to return. Those miffed by the article are likely the ones the title is hinting at. They need to get over themselves.

But as the article ends with... If ya get to put your kids on the bus, AND be there when they get off... MORE POWER TO YA! Mommy AND Daddy bloggers!

The title actually just reminded me of what an ass I've been recently for waving my kid off when I've just been READING shit on the web. Gotta put a stop to that. It just ain't right. (Much less tv time too. I don't care if it's Sesame Street.)

As for DadLabs... I've never gotten the feeling that you neglect your children just for the sake of the Labs. I see it as a job. A fun job. But it's still work. And many many jobs take time away from family and such. But few jobs REQUIRE such family involvement as a parenting site like DadLabs.

It comes down to this... If your bloggin' is interfering with your parenting, you're doin' 'em both wrong.

Well said concretin_nik.

I didn't get the negativity either but I'm not a mommy blogger. I think that the idea of dad and mom bloggers getting paid is great. However I agree with concretin_nik again and if I suspected that they were being shallow ambitious turds I'd just quit reading it.

I don't but I'm pretty sure my wife reads several mommy blogs. She also is a member of The Bump which is an all things pregnancy and baby forum. I pretty much stick to the dad perspective. I check out hightechdad.com, dudetodad.com and I listen to the Cast of Dads every once in awhile.

I rarely read blogs, even the ones on this site. But is DadLabs even close to a blog site? If it were, I don't think I'd be here. Don't worry about it.

I forgot to mention one that my wife got me reading. It started out as a way to let his family know how things were going with the pregnancy then it took a very sad turn. It's a guy who is raising his daughter by himself. His wife died right after she was born.

One suggestion to guys with wives approaching the due date. Wait to read this. I think I definitely stressed a lot more during our whole ordeal at the hospital because of this.

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
