TOPIC: Kid Speak

Kid Speak
9 Months, 1 Week ago
So I was chatting with some parent friends online and in person today and we were discussing kidspeak. The words that your kids mangle, but you don't quite have the heart to correct them on because they work for you and your family and they've become part of your household lexicon.

Here's a couple of examples from my home.

As an infant for the longest time Gat was my son's word for cat. Dogs, and all other living things were "got."

As a toddler/preschooler he would use the phrase "I amn't" in place of "I'm not".

And even as a 7yo he still refers to the state where my in-laws live as Yew Nork.

My 2.5 yo daughter currently refers to band-aids as "wam-bams."

So I'll pose the question, what are some of the treasured kidspeak expressions in your home?

My oldest pronounced the morning meal: Buff-kissed. Never corrected him.

My daughter didn't say tired, she said "tiren." She would famously stand in her crib and in a high singsong chant, "Daaaady, I'm not tiiiireeeen." We still quote that from time to time.

Great examples. Thanks for sharing.

Know exactly what you mean about not correcting them. We don't directly correct them either.

We sometimes would repeat back correctly what they were trying to say, to give them a chance to hear it used properly, but never as a correction.

Even now I cringe a bit internally for the youth lost when my son corrects himself on the Yew Nork v. New York thing. It's like I can see his childhod evaporating right before my eyes.

And yes, I think "I amn't" and "wam bams" are going to be fixtures in our family language for a long time coming.

Those are great. I always am a little sad when the correct pronunciation begins!

In our home a few are: efelants, aminals, bahbush (toothbrush)

Had some recent additions in our house that I wanted to add here.

Lil Bit (age 3) after a meal of chocolate milk and frozen blueberries..."Daddy, do I have a mess-tache?" Me: "Yes, Baby. A mess-tache is exactly right."

Whirlwind (age 8) discussing horses..."Dad, do you prefer Morgans, or Appoo-sa-las?" Me: "Appaloosas?" Whirlwind: "Yeah, Appoo-sa-las. It's a horse, Dad. I like Morgans, they're more graceful." Me: "Yeah, I know what it is. I just never gave it much thought. But I think I prefer Appoo-sa-las."

My 15 month old has a floppy stuffed animal piggy sorta thing. It reminds me of 10" tall San Diego Chicken for some reason so that is my mind set when I'm in charge of making Piggy come alive. She get's excited and yells " Diggy!Diggy!".

Most of Oliva's words still sound like dada. She knows a dozen baby signs and speaks a lot, but not usually real words. I know I am really going to miss this stage.

My parents still remind me of when I used to say Philly-adelphia when we took my dad to the airport from Jersey when i was a toddler.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
