Have you ever said something that has upset somebody only to wonder why? Here’s something my old boss said recently when he was asking after me. My wife told him I was finding it hard to be the father in a mother’s world.
He thought he would try the local mother and toddlers group just to try and get to socialise with other like minded people. He found himself attending for the second week and for the second week running, he was the only father.
He was attending with his two eldest daughters and felt he was getting along just fine. Then it was feeding time for the youngest one. By all accounts he was struggling a bit, you know the one, youngster in one hand whilst trying to get the bottle warm, add the milk, shake well and then get comfortable.
He sat down next to a mother that was about to feed her daughter, only she had a bit of an easier time. Sit down, unbutton top and away she goes. Whilst watching how simple her task was, my old boss being the sociable type was never one to pass an opportunity to strike up a conversation. He suddenly came out with “I wish I could do that”.
The mother then looked at him, scalded face, picked up her belongings and moved to the other side of the hall. My old boss was quite put off with the reaction he got to a genuine remark. He said that it wasn’t until he was driving home that the penny dropped. He had sat and watched the baby cling onto the milk supply just as he came out with “I wish I could do that”
Needless to say, he never went back again.
