TOPIC: Do you let the babysitter drive your kids?

Do you let the babysitter drive your kids?
3 Years, 11 Months ago
The summer logistics are particularly intense in our household. Half-day summer camps are a pain in the ass. When we discovered that one of the coaches at my kids soccer camp was living down the block, it seemed like an easy call -- let him drive. He's 20 (and a former student of mine). Other parents in our carpool were uncomfortable with this. Would you be okay with a babysitter that you knew well driving your kids?

Why not?

In your case, you're already trusting the guy with your child when you're not present, and it saves you the drive!

I think people get unnecessarily queasy about other people driving, especially if said other people are under the age of 30.

Plus I'm sure your kids will tell you if the driver does anything really crazy [re: Blow through red lights, brake hard constantly, floor it and aim for hobos, doing lines of coke off of their juice box while driving towards mexico with the parking brake on... etc.]

Funny, I think my kids might find some of those behaviors oddly comforting in their familiarity.

I think it all depends on the babysitter. Some of our babysitters no problem, others I don't even let them work the microwave.

Not a bad idea to carpool nowdays, with gas being the price that it is. One could easily save a buck or two here and there by letting someone else drive. With me, it would probably depend on the person and their level of maturity. Probably a couple of other factors as well, such as if their car had more dents than a New York city taxi cab, probably not a good idea. Everyone has the best of friends and neighbors they can or can't trust. My significant other says I have a slight tendancy to overanalyze just about everything and I have to agree wholeheartedly, but this one is simple. Go with your gut, it's never steered me wrong. As long as they are aware of just who's in the car/car seat and handle themselves accordingly, why not? Depends on the person and the situation I guess, from one household to another. I'd have to go with Daddy Brad on this one, there are those who can do it all, and some that can't do anything. Up to us to make the call.

Bri-

Good luck being camp director. Will you wear a whistle and carry a clipboard?

Our mother's are going to be our son's babysitters, so yeah, I trust them to drive him.

We absolutely, positively will not let my mother drive our daughter! So if babysitter = my mother, then car seat = hidden!

Well I don't know about your mother, but our mother's are very protective and very trustworthy. Our son will not be either of their first grandkids. I'm sorry that you such trust issues with your mom, but as for ours, I'd trust either one of them ... my mother or my mother-in-law, with my life. They're wonderful people and wonderful mothers and grandmothers.

It has nothing to do with trust or being protective. Some people are simply bad drivers, not because they are not trustworthy, but because they lack physical coordination and a basic grasp of physics...i.e. they are a klutz. My mother is one of these people. Anyone who drives with her quickly realizes that they are in for the ride of their life.

There's no need to tell me that you are sorry I have trust issues with my Mom...don't be a jackass...

And there's no need to show how mature of a boy you really are by using such language. All you had to do was state that your mother is simply a bad driver, period. And yes, that has EVERYTHING to do with trust and protectiveness, because you do not TRUST her driving enough to let her drive your child, hence being PROTECTIVE of your child. Maybe you need to re-read what you wrote to see how much sense it makes. So, if you don't mind, this is a site for adult men who want to have MATURE discussions; let's leave the childishness at the playground. Thanks.

I think my wife and I would both agree that her mom is not the safest of drivers and if we can avoid it we'd rather not have her drive the kids. If we are along with then sure but not by herself. However we trust my parents.

If I knew the person very well and that he/she was a very good and safe driver and I saw and approved of the car they drove, I don't see any problems in letting them drive.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
