Do Immunizations Scare You? Standard or Alternative Schedule, and Why?
3 Years, 4 Months ago
What did you decide to do with your kid's shots -- go with the standard course set out by the CDC and approved by the AAP -- or did you go with some kind of alternative schedule? What do you make of all the rumors about the safety of immunizations? What do you make of the autism scare?

Our little guy had some catching up to do and received 5 shots back in March. We just went back for the next round last week. Sure, the immediate sting is rough (especially with that initial batch of 5!) but we do our best to distract during, and comfort after, the injections. We gave him a half dose of Childrens' Tylenol just in case he became feverish, but haven't seen any real side-effects.

We're on-board with the immunizations - I'd much rather expose him to a minimal amount of risk via immunizations than the far greater risks associated with not opting for those preventative measures.

As for the autism scare, sure, I'm concerned. And I'm sure these folks are well-intentioned, but it seems rather foolish to place more trust in the opinions of celebrities than trained medical professionals.

We went with the expert - our pediatrician - on what to do... and that means standard schedule. What the hell do I know about drugs and medications and diseases? Seriously! That's what I pay them for. I'm focused on teaching the kid more important things, like manners and math... and how to write his name in the snow.

I strongly believe that there are children who are autistic that developed autism after the shots, and probably as a semi-direct result of those shots. But I believe there is something very specific about those children that when coupled with the chemicals in the immu shots, triggered the autism. (What that trigger or specific anomaly in them really is, I have no clue. Nor do doctors.) I strongly believe that the shots themselves do NOT cause the autism. Again, what the hell do I know? But the medical studies so far, do not show the immunizations actually causing autism.

I spent 7 years in engineering school, and during that time I spent many painful all-nighters cramming complex mathematical and scientifc topics in to my brain in the hopes that they might be useful some day. And after all that painful but exhilirating learning was done, the gap in engineering knowledge between me and the guy who works at Best Buy was....ahhhh.....pretty wide.

Doctors do the same thing. For 10 years they devote their entire existence to learning the medical profession. The gap between my medical knowledge and the knowledge of these professionals is roughly the size of the Grand Canyon. How on earth could I possibly be so arrogant as to believe that my Internet research on immunization schedules is just as good as the opinions rendered by folks who have devoted their *entire* lives to childhood health??

I am continually amazed that people with no scientific background or even inclination towards science somehow fancy themselves experts at complex medical topics. This would be funny (see: cars that run on water), but unfortunately, in this particular case, it's not funny because another human being's health is dependent on these fanciful delusions.

We're going with the standard schedule.

I totally agree with you, and we're going with the standard schedule.

I DO believe that if I or my husband had a family history of Autism my answer would probably be completely different and I'd probably delay vax.

A bunch of my friends have read the Dr. Sears book on vaccinations and have decided to use his schedule. I can completely understand that. And part of me does think that they vax for a lot of things that aren't necessary (like chicken pox).

We don't do flu shots because I question how well they actually work having had them a few times myself with varied results, but other than that we're on schedule vax'ers.

Right....a lot of people who have a history of autism would probably provide a completely different answer. The problem is that these people are using emotions to make their decisions, not logic or statistics. While emotional decisions may be preferred for matters of the heart, medicine doesn't fall in to that category. That's why people with a family history of autism need an independent third party who can step back and look at the situation without emotional baggage (aka a Doctor).

I also agree with your view re. the chick pox (and also the flu shot, for that matter).

We definitely went with the standard course -- our amazing pediatrician (now retired) was very firm on this issue. I find the community argument to vax pretty compelling as well -- that stepping outside the program puts all kids in the school/neighborhood/whatever at increased risk.

But don't let that intimidate you anti-vaxers -- we want to hear from you as well. I know you are lurking out there.

I hear ya brother, but today's action by Congress was the right thing to do. We have recovered from quite a few crashes in the past, and we'll recover again. As for me, I'm taking my wife's 401k out for a bargain hunting shopping spree in a few weeks.

I'm truly amazed that the political process has resulted in a libertarian style outcome. But I'll take it anyway I can get it.

They don't scare us, we have just educated ourselves more about them. It makes me laugh when I hear people say "Well my parents fully vaccinated me and I'm fine." Well, parents do what they feel is best for their children, but you shouldn't just follow in someone elses footsteps "just because." I believe in educating myself and forming my own opinions as opposed to following the "mainstream" or the "norm." Remember too that when most of us were younger, many of the vaccines didn't have the same ingredients that they do now ... a lot of people forget that.

My wife and I, after educating ourselves, decided that we would selectively vaccinate our children. Our son is 1 and our daughter is a newborn, and neither of them have had ANY vaccination. Not the Hep B which is given at birth, none of them. As of now, we only see about 5 vaccinations that we will give our children, and they will not receive any of those until they are 2 years old.

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
