TOPIC: Dad-Unfriendly Product Wall of Shame

Dad-Unfriendly Product Wall of Shame
1 Year, 6 Months ago
As an expectant dad, I've been surprised lately by the number of products that still have 'mom-centric' packaging. It seems like most of the products on the market today that were once marketed only towards women (like cleaning products, etc.) have aligned with the times and show a passing awareness that men buy stuff in stores, too. Baby products seem to have missed this train.

Meanwhile we get to see bus stop ads telling men to be good dads by not abandoning their families (they give us so much credit).

So, I thought it might be cathartic to start a gallery of product packages, websites, etc. that need to catch up.

Better for baby, better for mom… Dad's working late with his secretary again.

Dads don't need travel systems. Burlap sacks do just fine for us.

Evenflo Car Seats have safety innovations 'for moms like you.' (Don't worry about Dad; he's not a crappy driver like Mom.)

I'm a very torn on this subject, as I personally, don't care... the product is the product, and as a marketing major many many moons ago, I'm a bit of a advertising snob. You gotta really catch my attention, or I really NEED your product before I'll even look at it, and having a Dad on the package isn't gonna make me look...

However, 2 equal strollers, same price, same functions... one has a Dad and one doesn't, yea, I'm goin' with the Dude package. (wait, um, you know what I meant right?)

I also understand that some companies do lots of research and their research shows this package gets more attention or is liked better than that package. Yadda whatever. (Let's not discuss that their focus group was probably 99% Moms.) So if all Moms on a box helps them sell more product(or gives them that perception), then that's a bottom line business decision, right? So I'd probably do the same...

But, in text like the examples above, it's stupid easy to say "Parents" or "Moms & Dads" and seems ridiculous to not include everyone. Why wouldn't you? (ESPECIALLY on the website. That's dumb.) It seems to me, Moms absolutely dig it when Dad is "involved," so in my head anyway, it seems Moms would dig that product too, because THEY include Dad, and that somehow makes it like SHE is including Dad too.

I do look forward to more post in this thread though. And if I happen to see one that irks me, I'll certainly upload it...

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
