"Celebrity Parents"

It's nothing new to the regulars, and would likely be no surprise to lurkers and noobs that I'm a HUGE Tony Hawk fan.

Via the wonderful evil of theBook (facebook), I read an article stating Tony's parenting tips for "Extreme Parenting." (And YES, I know him well enough to call him by his first name. And it's NOT "stalking!" I call it, "creative fan appreciation." Just so you know.)

www.menshealth.com/celebrity-fitness/extreme-parenting

One of my wife's favorite Hawk quotes is from a skate vid I've watched (probably hundreds of times)... "Not in the street Riley, not in New York." Tony's oldest son Riley is indeed carrying on the legacy these days (at 15)... but the quote is from when he was 7 or 8 traveling with Dad on a skate tour. She uses it anecdotely when something is going on that isn't necessarily bad, but the time/place is inappropriate.

So enjoy. And feel free to add to this thread. Please, post up LEGIT celebrity parental advice. The celebparentalFAILS get enough coverage in the tabloids.

Disclaimer: I'm not sayin' celeb advice is better than anyone else's. I was just stoked to see how someone I admire handles his son's particular 'extremism.'

Finally got a question answered by another "skate celebrity"... Bob Burnquist. Was live on the X-Games FB page.

Here's the question and the answer (paraphrased as I am not good at dictation):

Taking risks is part of your profession. Did becoming a dad change your attitude toward pushing the edge?

Yes. Made me push away the BS… when it's just you, you do whatever you want. When there's a family you have decisions… I had to decide if I wanted to pursue just pure skating, no comps, just film or as more of a job with competitions. Becoming a Dad changed my drive. I decided to go with the competitions and skate as much as possible. And I want to do better for them. (To provide for them.)

Good article, Nik. The dynamic between celebrity dad and his son can be an interesting one.

I like the relationship between JN Roberts and his son Jimmy, as shown in my all time favorite documentary, Dust to Glory. They team up for the Baja 1000 desert race. How cool would that be to be able to race with your dad like that. (I hoghly recommend that movie, if not for the racing, then for the humanitarian stories it tells, it's scenic location, and the score is superb. Oh, and it's directed by Dana Brown, son of surfing movie "Endless Summer"s Bruce Brown, in keeping with the theme of this thread.)

Former NBA star Popeye Jones struggled a bit when his three sons all wanted to play hockey instead of basketball. The middle son, at age 16, looks like a highly touted prospect. He watches his son take comand of a game and realizes that the qualities that make a good hockey defenseman are very similar to those of a good basketball point guard.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
