TOPIC: Baby registry, any thoughts?

Baby registry, any thoughts?
2 Years, 2 Months ago
Whats going on guys. Ok so me and my wife finally registered. Since we are first time parents we were wondering if our registry was good enough or if we should add any other stuff that you guys might recommend. Thanks for the help and time. In order to view our registry it is under buybuybaby.com and its under my name Rigo Licona. Thanks again guys.

Looks fine to me. I think you've got bases covered.

But I have more thoughts than that...

I don't get the baby mittens. You've got to learn how to trim those nails sometime, and the best time to learn is right away. Mittens seem like a waste of resources.

I also wouldn't jump right into a full set of bottles from one particular maker. Babies often get fussy about the bottles initially. If you get a basic set, plenty of other folks will ask if you need anything later on and you'll have a ready answer. We have a mess of bottles that just didn't work for our kids. You'll quickly learn what's the rage in your house and fully populate accordingly.

The same goes for pacifiers.

Wow, those diaper bags are expensive. We got three or more from the hospital with each kid. I'm the diaper bag cheapskate on here, though. The truth of the matter is that unless you want to spend a lot of time keeping inventory control systems updated, one bag will be in use. Diaper sizes change quickly in the first six months. (Yeah, you're doing disposables based on the diaper pail...) If you take the kid out with your bag and the diapers are too small and the wipes are dry, you're out of luck. Save some effort by having a main diaper bag and a quick jaunt bag instead of a his and hers set.

And the diaper pail. I much prefer the Munchkin and Arm & Hammer one. Not only do they support DadLabs, it's pretty straight forward and does keep the odor down with the baking soda. Once diapers get to size 4 & 5, I don't think anything's safe, but for certain, the Munchkin is my favorite for under a year.

And lastly, thermometers. I needed one quickly last week. When I finally found the digital ear one, it was impossible to use well. It works great when your baby is laying still and maybe even asleep. But I can assure you that when you need it, that won't be the case. Get one and then load up on every other type you can find. That goes for nasal aspirators, nail clippers, hair brushes and eating bibs as well.

I know I'm opinionated about these things, but it mostly comes from a load of recent experience.

Well, I didn't actually look at your registry USMCdad, but the standard "gear to buy" advice I give to expecting parents is to buy some sort of toy chest or other large container to hold all of the toys and presents that will find their way into your house via a myriad of sources.

Seriously.

I don't know why "toy chest" never makes the list of essential baby stuff, but I think it damn well should.

Good thought. We got a bassinet that converts into a toy chest for #2. In retrospect, we should have gotten another toy chest at the same time.

Great advice on the toy chest. I hadn't thought of that. Babe and I will be sharing a room for a bit so it would be nice to have a place to keep all those noisy baby toys so I wont kick one in the middle of the night, set it off, and wake up little one.

And the diaper pail. I much prefer the Munchkin and Arm & Hammer one.

Thats really good to hear. My friend got me that exact pail after I had decided I wasn't going to get one since I read most of the time diaper pails didn't work. I'm glad I have it now because it goes back to sharing a room. I can be as lazy as possible in the middle of the night and stay odor free

My advice is don't count on your registry for everything you need. People love buying cute little baby clothes, so you may end up with a bunch of clothes, but none or little of the essentials. I just had my shower a few weeks ago, so I know what your going through right now.

Any idea of a "Daddy Present" yet? I think all dads should get something either from someone or for themselves for the baby shower. Either baby related or not. Tim got a new... um... "piece"... ... for his daddy present.

Just in terms of the registry itself, my wife and I found it to be really helpful to use myregistry.com, an online registry site that lets you add stuff from any store, instead of picking just one store to register with. This way we were able to find the best prices and there were a few things my wife wanted, like a fancy diaper bag, that were only sold at high end stores that we wouldn't use for our main registry. I noticed you registered at buy buy baby, and we found out that a lot of their items can be found for cheaper elsewhere. Just something I wish someone had told me from the start!

Looks pretty standard. My suggestions: We got a bunch of the cheap gerber cloth diapers that we have used for burp cloths. They're great.

About the Medela pump, To clean the tiny parts we use the Medela steam bags that sanitize everything in the microwave. My wife uses the Freestyle and we just bought a bunch of cheap gerber or evenflow bpa free plastic baby bottles. Just make sure that they have a lid that will seal without the nipple. They're our daily use storage containers and she can pump directly into them. I think you only get 2 Medela bottles with the pump itself. For me it's easier and cheaper to warm and wash the bottles than the thin plastic baggies that you toss. Not to mention the grief your wife will have when you get a leaky bag. We've been using the bags to put the extra in the deep freeze though. Also if you got any extra of that painters tape it to mark the dates and times on the bottles so you can do the whole first in first out thing.

One more thing is if your store gives you a discount on items that you didn't get that are on your registry tell them the due date or shower date is a month or two after the actual date. This way you will have a little more time to use the discount after you've taken inventory. That's what everyone told us anyway.

after listening to a bunch of friends, and getting major validation from this blog article from another dad: nicholascrawford.com/2010/01/17/a-mans-g...-to-a-baby-registry/

we didn't register for too may physical items from the store. just the absolute basics for when we brought the little on home. for the rest of the registry we used this awesome cash gift registry site called www.depositagift.com

we registered for the types of items we wanted to buy, but got the cash for them and then have been shopping as we needed. it's been great b/c we can buy online and get way better deals, plus our small place didn't turn into babies r us overnight. i highly recommend it!

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
