Are your children in line with their speech?
When we picked our son up this week from preschool, the manager happened to mention to us about our son speech. She felt that he wasn’t speaking clearly and felt that he might be “behind” with his speech development
With him being our eldest, we can’t compare him with other members of our family (younger brother not yet talking). I know that I remember having speech problems but these just sorted themselves out over the years and there is not really an issue. However, I am a little concerned now especially as we can understand 90% of what he says. In fact, only this week he has just managed to say his brother’s name completely (from Harri to Harrison).
Does anybody have any experience in this area and what is the process? Joshua is now 27 months.
Your help or advice is appreciated.
Regards
Martin

Hey, Martin.

We don't have experience with that yet. Our 22 month old isn't talking yet (maybe 5 words) but we think it'll be a switch that is just going to flip and we won't be able to stop him. I've been keeping tabs on other SAHDs who have kids with speech issues here in the states. The school systems generally have early intervention programs to help kids get up to speed by kindergarten (age 5) with free (or heavily subsidized) programs. I'm curious whether this will be something we end up looking into.

Our middle child, while being an incredibly early talker has some issues with correct pronunciation of numerous words. We are looking into speech therapy and our pediatrician was a the first person we spoke to for guidance and was very helpful.

Good luck.

Every child is different. Are you saying you can understand 90% of what he says, because you're around him more and you know what he means, or can you clearly hear what he's saying? Big difference there.

If he's speaking clearly, and the teacher thinks maybe he's behind compared to other children, IMO, don't worry about it. He's gettin' there.

Your experience sounds similar to mine really. My son is 3 yrs, 10 months. In the last 6 months, he has begun speaking MUCH more clearly (consistently). The year before that, he wasn't always clear, but we were able to understand him, but he'd have days that suddenly EVERY word were as if it were spoken by a 6 year old! Would freak us out on those days a bit. Some days he'd hardly talk at all or he'd just mumble.

Just this weekend TheBoy ordered his own food at a restaurant. It was awesome. And lately, he's been singing "in tongues" as far as I'm concerned. When I ask him, his answer is, "I'm singing in Spanish silly Daddy!" (He's clearly NOT actually singing in Spanish.) But he does often request to watch music videos of his favorite songs, in Spanish.

Doesn't sound like a big concern to me at this point, but I do understand it's not something you want to let linger. Teachers are relatively knowledgable and experienced with children's development, but if you're really concerned, check with your pediatrician too. Ask them for activities you can do with him to help him along.

We make our son use entire sentences when asking for help or for something he wants (pointing and saying milk won't get it), and open ended questions during play (Tell me about your day. Oh, you played cars? Who did you play with? Can you describe the cars? Which one was your favorite?)... things like that. Let him hear full conversational language. He'll get there.

Just a quick update. Joshua is talking a lot more now and he is saying new words every day however, he still seems to struggle with some words. I personely think it's just his age and that he will become clearer with how he speaks.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
