TOPIC: Talking to Children About Their Conception

Talking to Children About Their Conception
1 Year, 10 Months ago
So here's what's on my mind in terms of fertility. I have two children. The first born is a 6 year old conceived through the use of donor sperm. The second is a trans-racially adopted 18 mos old.

The 6yr old is coming to an age where I'm beginning to wonder if I should initiate conversations along the lines of, "you understand that I'm not your biological father, right?" Because of the late pre-school sort of "where do babies come from questions that resulted when his adoptive sister arrived, the six year old already understands at a very fundamental level that I didn't "give his mother the special cells that a man has to give a woman in order for a baby to grow in her tummy and be born."

But I don't believe he's made the connection that conception equals fatherhood. I keep reading articles that suggest the earlier you can talk these things over with a child, the easier it is for them to accept and embrace. My challenge is how do I start a conversation that the 6 year old doesn't seem to have any concern or issue with? I don't want him to be blindsided and overwhelmed with it later in life.

I'd welcome thoughts and ideas.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
