We live in San Diego, and while there are a ton of great things to do here, we love going on small road trips with the family. This last weekend, we headed up the coast to San Juan Capistrano because someone told us the old train station up there was really cool.

I actually wasn't very impressed by the train station, but there is a petting zoo very close to it that is awesome. It is probably the best petting zoo that I've been to with the possibly exception of the one at the San Diego Safari Park where you actually get to pet African Deer. The one in Capistrano is huge, and they have a really good selection of animals from rabbits and guinea pigs all the way up to llamas and (my personal favorites) zedonks which are crosses between a zebra and a donkey. It's not necessarily the cheapest petting zoo in the world. If I remember correctly, it was $9 for adults and $7 for the kids, but you can get a little plate of food for the animals for a couple bucks.

A couple blocks from the petting zoo is the old mission that the town is famous for. It's a terrific site for history buffs like me, and it seemed to keep the kids entertained as well. There are 2 separate koi ponds that the kids absolutely loved. If you get a chance, and you live in the area, San Juan Capistrano is definitely worth checking out.
